Starship Technologies, in conjunction with Milton Keynes Council, has announced the initial findings of an internal study to review the early impact of zero-emission robots in the city over the last three and a half years.

Since launching the emission-free autonomous delivery service in Milton Keynes in April 2018, Starship has calculated that 280,000 car journeys have been avoided, equating to over 500,000 miles. This in turn has seen 137 tons of CO2 and 22kg of NOx saved, with a reduction of 23kg of PM10 and 12kg of PM2.5 in the volume of micro-particles in the air. The latter in particular is known to have a significant impact on human health, including premature mortality and cardiovascular diseases.

Starship’s delivery robots, which are powered by zero carbon electricity, are part of a significant ecosystem in Milton Keynes geared towards the Council’s commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030 and carbon negative by 2050 in order to tackle climate change.

Despite the city coming top of a table of over 146 urban locations across the UK in a recent study examining air pollution levels carried out by Birmingham Institute for Forest Research and Lancaster University’s Environment Centre, Milton Keynes Council is taking nothing for granted. Just last year, the Council announced its Sustainability Strategy and Biodiversity Action Plan, focusing on how Milton Keynes will become a world-leading sustainable city.

The Council is also looking at how transport and mobility can reduce carbon emissions, and is one of the leading places in the UK in moving forward with zero carbon transport. Deployments include e-scooters, electric buses, e-car share and e-cargo cycles. Linking all of this to smart city energy management systems, Milton Keynes is poised to achieve its ambitions of carbon neutrality and help address the climate emergency facing society.

Cabinet Member for Climate Action and Sustainability, Jennifer Willson-Marklew, said: “We are delighted that Starship’s service is helping residents and businesses receive deliveries in an efficient and sustainable way. The operations are a great success and the results are testament to how thinking differently about our carbon challenges can deliver better outcomes all round. Whether it’s Starship, more electric vehicle charging or electric buses, Milton Keynes will continue establishing itself as a modern, forward-thinking city that’s ready to take on the climate challenge head-on.”

Volker Beckers, Special Advisor to the Starship Technologies board and former Group CEO of RWE Npower plc, added: “An average delivery for a Starship robot consumes as little energy as boiling the kettle to make just one cup of tea. These initial findings therefore demonstrate the significantly positive impact that electrically powered robots can have in helping to reduce harmful emissions and how energy could be used more effectively. Starship remains as committed as ever to working closely with Milton Keynes Council and helping to tackle some of the huge challenges in discussion surrounding COP26. We are further encouraged that additional research has revealed that close to 70% of Starship’s customers forgo driving to a store or receiving a delivery from a fuel powered vehicle in favour of robot delivery.”

BROOKINGS, SD and SAN FRANCISCO | Nov. 8, 2021

Residents of Brookings will soon be getting a glimpse of the future, thanks to South Dakota State University and Starship Technologies. Beginning today, SDSU students will be able to order delivery from several on-campus eateries, with orders delivered by Starship’s fleet of 30 autonomous robots.

SDSU is the first university campus in the state of South Dakota to implement robot food delivery service. While robot deliveries may seem futuristic, Starship has already completed more than two million commercial deliveries across five different countries. At SDSU, the robots will make on-demand deliveries from three campus eateries – Grille Works, Papa Johns and Starbucks – with additional locations added soon.

The small, six-wheeled robots are designed to travel on sidewalks but they are also able to cross streets, climb curbs, deliver day and night and in a variety of weather conditions, including rain and snow. The robots can do all of this on their own, using a variety of technologies such as radars, sensors and cameras, and are remotely monitored so a human operator can take over during a difficult road crossing or if the robots encounter something unexpected such as construction.

The robots travel at an average speed of 4MPH and each robot can carry up to 20 lbs – the equivalent of about three shopping bags of goods.

The delivery area wll span from 9th Avenue to Jackrabbit Avenue and 7th Street to 18th Street.

Brookings residents may see the robots on city streets and in crosswalks as they make their deliveries. The robots are designed to detect objects in their path, from humans to dogs to vehicles. Drivers approaching a robot on a curb or in a crosswalk should approach slowly and be prepared to stop, similar to what would happen if they encounter humans or pets.

“The one thing we have learned in recent years is that students and faculty like flexibility in their dining options,” said Doug Wermedal, associate vice president for student affairs at SDSU. “The ability to have something delivered to various locations throughout campus and the community will be impactful to our students and employees as they continue to manage busy and demanding schedules. We are excited about this partnership, the robotics technology and the student employment opportunities Starship will bring to our campus.”

“We’re excited to make our South Dakota debut at SDSU,” said Ryan Tuohy, SVP of Business Development and Sales at Starship Technologies. “The winters can be tough here so we know the students, faculty and staff will appreciate the robots delivering their food and drink orders. We look forward to providing this convenient service and becoming a part of the campus community.”

Starship Technologies operates commercially on a daily basis around the world. Its zero-emission robots have made more than 2 million autonomous deliveries, travelled millions of miles and make more than 90,000 road crossings every day.

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. | Oct. 25, 2021

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and its food services provider, Sodexo, have partnered with Starship Technologies to roll out the university’s food delivery service via autonomous robots. A&T is the first historically Black college or university (HBCU) to partner with Starship, as well as its first partnership in North Carolina.

Starship’s fleet of 20 autonomous, on-demand robots will deliver from three campus eateries: Qdoba, 1891 Bistro and the new Paavo’s Pizza with the goal to expand additional retail locations by next spring. A&T’s students, faculty and staff can now use the Starship Food Delivery app (iOS and Android) to order food and drinks to be delivered on campus, within minutes.

“As a STEM university, A&T and Sodexo’s partnership with Starship Technologies’ autonomous delivery robots falls right in line with what we are about,” said Angela Peterson, associate vice chancellor for Campus Enterprises. “We are incredibly excited to provide this service to our students to help minimize wait times and do it using a real-world application of technology similar to what some of our students are studying.”

The service will be free of delivery fees, which will be covered for students by the university for two years and works in conjunction with student meal plans.

“We are excited to be the first to bring this innovative service to a historically black college and university campus,” said Joseph Burdi, Sodexo district manager for North Carolina A&T Dining Services. “The program will provide added convenience for today’s busy students and meet their increased dining expectations.”

“Everyone on campus loves the robots and looks forward to using them,” said Student Food Advisory Board President Brandon Daye. “They will really come in handy when the weather is bad or if you want to grab food or snacks in between classes.”

Starship Technologies’ zero-emission robots use a combination of sophisticated machine learning, artificial intelligence and sensors to travel on sidewalks and navigate around obstacles. The computer vision-based navigation helps the robots to map their environment to the nearest inch. The robots can cross streets, climb curbs, travel day and night and operate in both rain and snow. A team of humans can also monitor their progress remotely and can take control at a moment’s notice.

“We’re really looking forward to serving the students, faculty and staff at A&T,” said Ryan Tuohy, Senior Vice President of Business Development and Sales at Starship Technologies. “We look for university partners that embrace innovation and A&T has that in spades. Because of the focus on STEM, we think the campus community will not only appreciate seeing this innovation firsthand, but they’ll also love the convenience that the service provides. We’re also looking forward hiring student workers who will get real-world experience in AI.”

To get started, users open the Starship Deliveries app, choose from a range of their favorite food or drink items, then drop a pin where they want their delivery to be sent. They can then watch as the robot makes its journey to them, via an interactive map. Once the robot arrives, they receive an alert, and can then meet and unlock it through the app. The delivery usually takes just a matter of minutes, depending on the menu items ordered and the distance the robot must travel. Each robot can carry up to 20 pounds.

The robot delivery company is already providing services to other Sodexo-serviced campuses across the country, including George Mason University, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and Northern Arizona University.

Co-op and Starship Technologies have today confirmed plans to extend their partnership, adding new robots to take the total fleet to 500 autonomous vehicles across the UK, while launching robotic delivery services in five new towns and cities.

The convenience retailer – the first major UK supermarket to use robots for home delivery – in partnership with Starship Technologies, will increase the robot fleet by over 300 by the end of the year – increasing Co-op’s offer of on-demand convenience and cutting carbon emissions on last mile deliveries.

The robots are expected to be making deliveries in five new towns and cities, with Cambridgeshire the next location after Co-op and Starship first launched the emission-free autonomous delivery service in Milton Keynes in 2018, and Northampton in 2020. Shoppers can choose from over 3,000 grocery items, which are delivered in as little as 20 minutes through the Starship Food Delivery app.

Recent research has shown that close to 70% of Starship’s customers forgo driving to a store or receiving a delivery from a fuel powered vehicle in favour of robot delivery, complementing Co-op’s pledge to ensure all of its home deliveries are zero emission by 2025.

Starship’s service is now available to more than one million people around the world on a daily basis. The company has quadrupled deliveries since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and its zero-emission robots have completed more than 1.6 million commercial deliveries globally, more than any other autonomous delivery provider.

Alastair Westgarth, CEO of Starship Technologies, commented: “We are pleased to extend our hugely successful collaboration with Co-op and bring the benefits of autonomous delivery to thousands more people across the UK. More and more people are realising that it doesn’t make sense to drive to the store for ‘top up’ groceries when the hassle can be removed through autonomous, contactless and environmentally friendly delivery. Ultimately, we want to save time and money for our customers, and make their lives easier in a sustainable way.”

Chris Conway, Head of eCommerce, Co-op, said: “Our focus is to continue to innovate and look for new and better ways to do business in our communities while expanding access to our products and services. In addition to offering quality and value quickly, easily and conveniently, we need to do this sustainably, and by working collaboratively with Starship and other partners with shared values we can ensure we further reduce greenhouse gas emissions, something which is essential if we are to have a healthy and sustainable natural environment to pass on to future generations.”

Co-op’s online offer has rolled-out at pace since the launch of its own online shop – coop.co.uk/shop – less than three years ago. Through its own vehicles or with partners, almost four-fifths (2,000) of its stores in towns, cities and villages across the UK will be in the catchment area for either online home delivery or click and collect by the end of 2021. All orders are picked fresh from Co-op stores in the community which act as micro-distribution hubs locally so the High Street benefits from any increase in online demand.

Earlier this year Co-op announced a new ten-point climate plan setting out its blueprint to achieve net zero for its direct and indirect carbon emissions by 2040. This includes offsetting the greenhouse gas emissions of Co-op products and services, including its food and drink, to achieve carbon neutral status by 2025. It already sources 100% renewable electricity to run all its food stores, funeral homes and offices.

Starship Technologies operates commercially on a daily basis around the world. Its robots have travelled millions of miles and make more than 80,000 road crossings every day. Users can access the service via the Starship Food Delivery app, which is available for download on iOS and Android. To get started, users choose from a range of their favourite food or drink items, then drop a pin where they want their delivery to be sent. They can then watch as the robot makes its journey to them, via an interactive map. Once the robot arrives, they receive an alert, and can then meet and unlock it through the app.

Philips is currently the CEO of daa plc, whose principal activities include the operation and management of Dublin and Cork Airports, global airport retailing subsidiary ARI, and international aviation consultancy daa International. Philips was previously CEO of UK supermarket chain Morrisons from March 2010 – February 2015.

Philips brings vast retail experience having held many senior retail leadership roles alongside that of Morrisons, including Chief Operating Officer of Loblaw – Canada’s leading retailer, CEO Brown Thomas Group, and Chief Operating Officer of both Walmart Brazil and Walmart Germany. He has an MBA from Harvard Business School and has been a Senior Advisor to The Boston Consulting Group, the global management consultancy.

Dalton Philips said: “Cracking the last mile – as in exceeding customer expectations at a cost that is economically accretive for the retailer – has been the ultimate goal of all digitally connected businesses for the last decade. Starship Technologies has developed both the hardware and software which will allow global retailers to now realise this ambition, and it’s a huge honour to join this incredibly exciting board where I hope to bring my own retail experience to support what is arguably the finest team in this space anywhere in the world.”

Starship’s co-founder and CTO Ahti Heinla, added: “Dalton brings an enormous amount of retail experience and nous to Starship. He understands the customer, and critically he understands the challenges needed to succeed in the last-mile delivery space. We couldn’t be more thrilled to have him join our Board and leverage his vast experience as we continue in our quest to make Starship the global leader in last-mile delivery.”

Starship announced in July that Alastair Westgarth had been appointed as the company’s new CEO, joining from Alphabet’s Loon, which started as part of X, Google’s Moonshot Factory.

Starship operates commercially on a daily basis around the world. Its zero-emission robots have made more than 1.6 million autonomous deliveries, travelled millions of miles and make more than 80,000 road crossings every day.

The Starship Food Delivery app is available for download on iOS and Android. To get started, users choose from a range of their favorite food or drink items, then drop a pin where they want their delivery to be sent. They can then watch as the robot makes its journey to them, via an interactive map. Once the robot arrives, they receive an alert, and can then meet and unlock it through the app.

SAN FRANCISCO | August 10, 2021

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, announced today that it will begin delivery service on four additional college campuses: University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), University of Kentucky (UK), University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Daytona Beach, FL campus. These campuses join the list of college campuses across the US where Starship robots will continue to provide deliveries this fall with its global fleet of over 1,000 robots.

All of these universities are the first in their respective states to offer autonomous on-demand robot delivery service to their campus communities. The service has already started with an initial set of merchants and hours at UNR and Embry-Riddle and will be fully operational when students return for classes. Service will begin at University of Kentucky on August 16 and become fully operational when classes begin a week later. Service is expected to begin at UIC this fall.

Details on the service include:

  • UIC: 25 robots, with 11 merchants including Starbucks, Panda Express and Freshii
  • UK: 20 robots, starting with 7 merchants including Starbucks, Subway and Auntie Anne’s
  • UNR: 20 robots, with 14 merchants including Panera Bread, Habit Burger and Baja Fresh
  • Embry-Riddle: 20 robots, with 10 merchants including Starbucks, QDOBA, Flight Cafe and Legacy Walk Wings Food Truck

“We’re excited to welcome such a diverse and exciting roster of schools to our service,” said Alastair Westgarth, CEO of Starship Technologies. “We’ve worked hard to become a trusted and integrated partner on our campus communities and that hard work has paid off. We are continuing to add new schools every semester, with more to be announced this fall. The students love the robots and the schools appreciate the ability to offer this service. We can’t wait to meet the students at each of these schools and look forward to hiring students on all of the campuses to give them real world experience working with robots and AI.”

College students quickly embraced Starship’s delivery robots when they began service at George Mason University in Virginia in January 2019. The popularity has continued to increase with Starship’s service now available across nearly 20 different campuses in 15 states. Starship also plays a key role in helping ensure laws are in place for the safe operation of personal delivery devices, which are now authorized to operate in more than 50 percent of US states.

“We see the Starship robots as an important part of safely bringing students back to campus,” said Dean Kennedy, executive director of Residential Life, Housing and Food Services at University of Nevada, Reno. “Everyone wants to resume in-person classes and be back on campus so we’re doing everything we can to make sure it’s done responsibly. The robots offer several advantages – they make social distancing easier, they are convenient, the students we have spoken with love this idea and they continue our heritage of being an innovative campus.”

“I never thought I’d be sharing sidewalks with a robot when I thought about going to college but they feel right at home with the coming age of innovation and technology,” said Johan Restrepo, a student at Embry-Riddle. “It seems really futuristic yet completely normal at the same time. It’s always fun to see them travelling around campus and having the option to get food delivered is a huge bonus that my friends and I can’t get enough of!”

According to Westgarth, “Starship was an essential service for many students during the pandemic. We consistently broke delivery records, even with fewer students on campus. We heard from so many students about how much they appreciated the service, how the robots made their time on campus seem ‘more normal’ and how they helped brighten their moods during a really difficult time.”

Delivery hours vary at the participating campus restaurants and payment options include credit and debit cards and the student meal plan. At each campus location, local students are hired and trained to join the Starship team.

Starship Technologies operates commercially on a daily basis around the world. Its zero-emission robots have made more than 1.6 million autonomous deliveries, travelled millions of miles and make more than 80,000 road crossings every day.

SAN FRANCISCO | June 1, 2021

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, today announced that Alastair Westgarth has been appointed Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately.

“I’ve been following Starship Technologies’ progress for a considerable time now,” said Westgarth. “Autonomous delivery is changing logistics as we know it, impacting billions of people around the world. The team at Starship has been developing and perfecting the technology and its operations for years, since creating the robot delivery category in 2014. The pandemic fast-tracked wider awareness of contactless delivery and now many more customers and businesses understand its convenience, ease and environmental benefits. I’m excited about this opportunity and looking forward to helping the company scale both on campuses and in neighborhoods, giving millions more people access to this market-leading, convenient, safe and environmentally friendly delivery service.”

Westgarth has more than 30 years’ experience and was most recently CEO at Alphabet’s Loon, which started as part of X, Google’s Moonshot Factory, and focused on bringing internet access to unserved and underserved communities around the world via a network of balloons operating on the edge of space. He has deep tech expertise and has built and run several companies. Prior to joining Loon in 2017, he served as CEO at Quintel Solutions, was a vice president at Nortel and director of engineering at Bell Mobility. Westgarth holds a degree in electrical engineering from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

Starship, which is now available to more than one million people on a daily basis, announced in May that it had quadrupled deliveries globally since the start of the pandemic and that it had completed 1.5 million commercial deliveries around the world.

“Alastair shares our belief that we are building something that will make the world of delivery better for everyone,” said Janus Friis, co-founder of Starship. “Last-mile delivery is notoriously costly, inefficient and harms the environment from excessive congestion and pollution. We think Alastair has the right experience and mindset to help Starship continue to grow its position as a leader in reshaping last-mile delivery, which will impact the movement of things on a much larger scale.”

Starship’s co-founder Ahti Heinla, who is now taking on the role of CTO, added: “When we created Starship in 2014, we wanted to make peoples’ lives easier and upend the way people received goods. We’ve seen that vision come to life over the past few years and our technology is now ready to truly scale. Alastair’s global leadership and tech skills will be vital in helping us take Starship to the next stage in our growth journey.”

LONDON | May 13, 2021

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, has today announced that its delivery numbers have quadrupled globally since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the service is now available to one million people around the world.

“This past year has been a game changer for autonomous delivery, moving adoption ahead by years,” said Ahti Heinla, Co-founder and CEO of Starship Technologies. “When we launched commercial delivery three years ago, we didn’t expect to be at the point we are today. We marked the significant milestone of one million deliveries in January 2021 and we’ve since surpassed 1.5 million deliveries. These rapid developments have also helped us scale the business, so we can provide a lower cost of delivery than any other option available.”

As well as offering a reliable way to protect vulnerable populations and adhere to social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, contactless delivery offerings such as Starship’s service have also proved to be a vital revenue stream for local businesses. In the last 12+ months, Starship has partnered with 40 independent merchants in Milton Keynes and Northampton, enabling these companies to offer a delivery service to local residents that they didn’t previously provide in order to continue operations.

One of these businesses that has thrived in the last year is St Mary’s Chippy, a local fish and chip takeaway in Milton Keynes offering contactless delivery using Starship’s fleet of 100+ robots in the town.

“Over the last 12 months during the pandemic we’ve faced a very difficult time as have many local businesses with the lockdowns and guidelines around when and how we’ve been able to stay open,” said Tony Paolucci, Owner of St Mary’s Chippy in Milton Keynes. “However, partnering with Starship has provided a lifeline as it has enabled us to offer delivery services to customers that we didn’t provide previously as a walk in takeaway. In the last year we’ve seen our order numbers grow by 15% through using the robots. It’s a fantastic service!”

Starship Technologies operates commercially on a daily basis around the world. Its zero-emission robots have made more than 1.5 million autonomous deliveries, more than any other autonomous delivery company in the world, travelled millions of miles and make more than 80,000 road crossings every day. The company has raised $102m in funding to date.

The Starship Food Delivery app is available for download on iOS and Android. To get started, users choose from a range of their favourite food or drink items, then drop a pin where they want their delivery to be sent. They can then watch as the robot makes its journey to them, via an interactive map. Once the robot arrives, they receive an alert, and can then meet and unlock it through the app.

UCLA and Bridgewater State University Join Growing List of Campuses to Offer Starship’s Contactless Delivery Service
SAN FRANCISCO | January 27, 2021

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, today announced that it has raised an additional $17m and added service to two new campuses – UCLA and Bridgewater State University (Massachusetts). Investors include TDK Ventures and Goodyear Ventures.

The company has also reached the significant milestone of completing one million autonomous deliveries, the first autonomous delivery company in the world to do so. The new investment brings Starship’s total funding to $102m to date.

UCLA, regularly considered one of the top public schools in the US, has launched Starship’s service with on-campus delivery from restaurants including Blaze Pizza, Bruin Buzz, Lu Valle, and Southern Lights. Bridgewater State University is also now providing delivery from campus restaurants including Starbucks Cafe and Bears Den. BSU, which offers one of the country’s most distinguished Teacher and Education programs, is the only public or private university aviation program in New England and offers a new photonics engineering program.

The additional funding comes at a time of increasing interest in the autonomous delivery industry. Contactless delivery has proved to be one of the most reliable ways to protect vulnerable populations and enable social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Goodyear Ventures is very excited to join Starship’s journey as it revolutionizes the autonomous delivery space,” said Abhijit Ganguly, senior manager, Goodyear Ventures. “Goodyear’s trusted services footprint combined with its custom solutions for autonomous vehicle companies comprise a solid platform to support Starship in the market. Goodyear Ventures fuels the future of mobility by partnering and investing in seed-to-growth-stage startups in emerging mobility technologies.”

“Over the last few years there has been a growing interest for food deliveries on campus, and

our new partnership with Starship Technologies has come at the perfect time,” said Cindy

Bolton, Associated Students UCLA Director of Food Operations. “The new service is an excellent alternative to traditional delivery, especially as we continue to confront the challenges of COVID-19. By using delivery robots, ASUCLA Restaurants can serve more essential workers and students on the UCLA campus.”

Starship has continued to see exponential growth since starting its first commercial delivery service in 2018. In the past year, Starship set several new delivery records within the company and expanded to more college campuses including Arizona State University (ASU), University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) and UC Irvine. In addition to starting service in Mountain View, CA, the company also began deliveries in Modesto, CA with its new partner The Save Mart Companies.

“Completing one million deliveries is a milestone that everyone at Starship is celebrating,” said Ahti Heinla, Co-founder and CEO of Starship Technologies. “We are delivering a fully commercial service operating 24-7 across five different countries now doing thousands of deliveries a day and millions of autonomous miles per year. This scale puts Starship on par with the biggest companies in the self-driving car market when it comes to miles travelled in the last year alone. We’re proud to be offering a crucial service that is now becoming part of everyday life for millions of people.”
