The University of Akron rolled out a robot food delivery service today. The robots will deliver to campus building and residence halls.

The robots are compliments of a partnership between Starship Technologies, creator of the robots, Aramark, and The University of Akron.

Starship’s fleet of autonomous, on-demand robots will deliver from several campus eateries including: Starbucks, Qdoba, Panda Express, Auntie Anne’s and Freshens. Students, faculty and staff can now use the Starship app to order food and drinks from local retailers to be delivered for a fee. The service works in conjunction with the student meal plan, or individuals can pay by credit card on the app.

Starship is already providing services to campuses across the country, including Purdue University, James Madison University, University of Mississippi and Arizona State University, among others. Since launch, all campuses have increased the number of robots to meet the demand.

To get started, users open the Starship Deliveries app, choose from a range of their favorite food or drink items, then drop a pin where they want their delivery to be sent. They can then watch as the robot makes its journey to them, via an interactive map. Once the robot arrives, they receive an alert, and can then meet and unlock it through the app. The delivery usually takes just a matter of minutes, depending on the menu items ordered and the distance the robot must travel. Each robot can carry the equivalent of about three shopping bags of goods.

“We’re happy to add another great university in Ohio,” said Chris Neider, vice president of business development at Starship Technologies. “The Zips have a very strong STEM program, and we think the campus community will enjoy being able to use this autonomous technology on a daily basis.”

Starship Technologies operates commercially daily around the world. Its zero-emission robots have made more than 5 million autonomous deliveries, traveled millions of miles and made more than 150,000 road crossings every day. The robots use a combination of sophisticated machine learning, artificial intelligence and sensors to travel on sidewalks and navigate around obstacles. The computer vision-based navigation helps the robots to map their environment to the nearest inch. The robots can cross streets, climb curbs, travel at night, and operate in both rain and snow. A team of humans can also monitor their progress remotely and can take control at a moment’s notice.

Grubhub and Starship Technologies rolled out its robot food delivery service today on the Sam Houston State University campus in Huntsville.

Starship’s fleet of autonomous, on-demand robots will deliver from eight campus eateries: Chick-fil-A, Panda Express, Pastabilities, Starbucks, Steak n Shake, Subway, Taco Sabroso and The Brisket Burger Co.

The campus community can now use the Grubhub app (iOS and Android) to order food and drinks from campus restaurants to be delivered campus-wide, within minutes. The service works in conjunction with the student meal plan.

“We are really excited to bring robots to campus and to offer our customers this type of technology,” said Brad Blackburn, Sam Houston Hospitality resident district manager. “Students place their order through the app, identify where they want their food delivered then we will fill the order and send the robot on its way. Once the robot arrives, the student uses their phone to open the hatch via the app, grab their order, close the hatch and send the robot back for another delivery. It’s really that simple!”

Grubhub and Starship are already providing robot food delivery services to campuses across the country, including the University of Kentucky, Fairfield University, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Wayne State University and Southern Methodist University.

“Robot delivery solves the unique challenges of accessing hard-to-reach areas that come from operating on a college campus,” said Adam Herbert, senior director of campus partnerships at Grubhub. “With Starship’s robots, students can enjoy a fun, new way to order their favorite meals right to their door—whether that be the library, their dorm, academic hall or another campus building. Offering this type of delivery further improves the Grubhub dining experience as we continue to provide innovative solutions for students and our campus partners.”

To get started, users open the Grubhub app, choose from a range of their favorite food or drink items, then select the location for their delivery to be sent.

“It’s always fun seeing how students react when we start service on a new campus,” said Chris Neider, VP of business development at Starship Technologies. “Our robots are designed to make life easier and more convenient, and we think the Bearkats community will be surprised how quickly they become a normal part of campus life.”

Starship Technologies operates commercially on a daily basis around the world. Its zero-emission robots have made more than 5 million autonomous deliveries, traveled millions of miles and make more than 150,000 road crossings every day. The robots use a combination of sophisticated machine learning, artificial intelligence and sensors to travel on sidewalks and navigate around obstacles. NEW ORLEANS and SAN FRANCISCO | September 8, 2023

Starship Technologies will roll out its robot food delivery service Sept. 6 at the University of New Orleans.

Starship’s fleet of autonomous, on-demand robots will deliver from several campus eateries, including the Sandbar, Subway, PJ’s, Brewed Awakening and Bowl Life. The school’s nearly 9,000 students and faculty can now use the Starship app (iOS and Android) to order food and drinks to be delivered anywhere on campus within minutes. The service works in conjunction with the student meal plan.

“New Orleans is a great city for food and we’re excited to be a part of that as we begin food deliveries for the University of New Orleans,” said Chris Neider, VP of business development at Starship Technologies, which is headquartered in San Francisco. “Our robots make it easy and convenient to get food delivered when and where they want it and we think they will quickly become a favorite with the campus community.”

Starship is already providing services at Purdue University, James Madison University, the University of Mississippi and Arizona State University. The company said its zero-emission robots have made more than 5 million autonomous deliveries, traveled millions of miles, and make more than 150,000 road crossings every day around the world. New schools, wireless charging and robot characters are added this year
SAN FRANCISCO | August 24, 2023

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, today announced that it is now offering its service to 50 college campuses across the US. This includes several new schools launching services, including Wichita State UniversityBoise State University and The University of New Orleans. Starship’s fleet of more than 2,000 robots provides deliveries in half of the US states as well as locations around the globe and more than 1.1 million students in the US have access to the service.

Starship is introducing new features this year, including wireless charging and robot characters. Starship is the first delivery company to wirelessly charge its robots, which increases utilization and efficiency. The service will be rolling out across all locations providing a completely touchless end-to-end experience as Starship continues to trailblaze the autonomous delivery market. Starship is already profitable in several locations and industry-first innovations like this are placing Starship on the verge of being a profitable business.

Students can also add some free customization to their deliveries. New this year, robot characters will be roaming the campuses and can be requested to make the delivery. The character voices include Sunshine (for a dose of positivity), Harry (British accent for a proper butler experience) and Asher (keeping it cool and casual). Students can alternatively continue the popular option of having the robot play a song from a pre-selected list. All options are available in the app (iOS and Android) and can be selected when placing an order.

Starship robots operate at L4 autonomy, making deliveries completely autonomously. Earlier this year, Starship announced that one of its robots completed 24 deliveries in 16 hours, 100% autonomously without any human intervention or oversight (current L5 record).

“Our robots have proved to be immensely popular, especially among college students who often adopt them as another campus mascot,” said Chris Neider, VP of business development at Starship Technologies. “We like to keep innovating and the new schools and new robot characters are great additions for the new school year.”

Starship has been providing on-demand robot deliveries to US college campuses since 2019, with the robots quickly being embraced by the campus communities. There are social media pages devoted to them, often filled with robot selfies.

Service at most schools has launched or will launch soon, with some going live this school year. Delivery hours will vary by campus and will include a variety of national and local eateries at each university. In most instances, the service is part of the meal plan, making it convenient for students to get deliveries when and where they want them.

Starship Technologies operates commercially on a daily basis around the world. Its zero-emission robots make more than 150,000 road crossings every day and have completed more than five million commercial deliveries and traveled more than 10 million kilometers (6 million miles) globally, more than any other autonomous delivery provider.

12,000 more residents to have access to sustainable delivery offering

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, has today announced that it is expanding its service across more neighbourhoods in Leeds in collaboration with Leeds City Council and the Co-op.

Following a very successful pilot launched in November 2022 which saw 20,000 residents within the Adel and Tinshill area of Leeds have access to Starship’s service, a further 12,000 households in Kippax and Swarcliffe will now be able to have their groceries delivered by robots quickly and conveniently.

Since launching in Leeds late last year, Starship’s robots have already contributed to a 2.5 tonne reduction in CO2 and the service has been widely welcomed by local communities. Orders are placed through the Starship food delivery app, which is available for download on iOS and Android, with residents in Kippax and Swarcliffe able to choose from a range of groceries picked fresh in two local Co-op stores (Co-op Kippax, 60 High Street and Co-op Swarcliffe Avenue).

With a delivery fee starting from just 99p, customers can order their delivery to arrive in under an hour and watch the robot travel in real-time via an interactive map. They will receive an alert when the robot arrives, and can meet and unlock it through the app.

Councillor Helen Hayden, Leeds City Council’s executive member for sustainable development and infrastructure, said: “Residents and families of Adel and Tinshill have welcomed Starship robots delivering their groceries, with over three-quarters of survey respondents in support of the introduction of the robots in the area. The expansion to Kippax and Swarcliffe will mean more people in Leeds can benefit from a zero-carbon alternative to grocery deliveries.

“As a council we’re pleased initiatives like this can help towards reducing the emissions of the last-mile delivery journey. It helps us to meet our pledge of becoming a carbon neutral city by 2030 by aiming to reduce short journeys to the shop made by car. Similar to the initial project in Adel and Tinshill, we have created a survey for Kippax and Swarcliffe’s residents and businesses to have their say on the six-month pilot.”

Andrew Curtis, Director of European Operations at Starship Technologies, said: “The feedback we have received since first launching in Leeds last year has been overwhelmingly positive and we are pleased to be able to extend the benefits the robots have provided to an additional 12,000 homes from today. More and more people are conscious of trying to reduce their carbon footprint and our robots help with this by eliminating the need for short car journeys to pick up groceries.”

Chris Conway, eCommerce Director, Co-op, said: “Co-op stores are well placed in the heart of local communities to provide quick, easy and convenient home deliveries – whether a full shop or last-minute top-ups. We are committed to exploring new and innovative ways to increase access to our products and services, and delighted to be able to roll-out autonomous robots to provide further online flexibility and choice across Leeds.”

Starship’s robots are powered by renewable electricity, with an average delivery for a robot consuming as little energy as boiling a kettle to make just one cup of tea, making them a more sustainable and affordable way to get groceries delivered direct to your door.

People use the service for its convenience and ease of use to fit shopping around their busy lives, including the 24% of Starship’s existing customers in Leeds who either have or live with someone that has an accessibility need.

Today’s expansion in Leeds continues Starship’s growth across Yorkshire following the launch of the service in Wakefield in May 2023, with the robots a familiar and popular sight in several other locations across the UK as well including Trafford, Milton Keynes, Northampton, Bedford and Cambridge.

Since launching commercial deliveries in 2018, Starship’s 2,000+ fleet of robots have safely completed more than five million deliveries around the world, with people using the service to save time and fit shopping around their busy lives. Globally, the robots undertake 140,000 road crossings every single day.

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, has today announced a new partnership with Bolt, the first European mobility super-app. As the initial first step of the evolving collaboration, Bolt and Starship have signed a commercial partnership opening the door to thousands of robots doing Bolt Food deliveries across multiple countries, starting this year.

Today’s announcement coincides with Starship celebrating another industry first milestone, having become the first company offering autonomous delivery to complete 5 million commercial deliveries around the world. This landmark has been achieved just seven months since Starship marked 4 million deliveries in November 2022, demonstrating the ongoing and ever-increasing demand for such services.

Bolt has more than 100 million customers in over 45 countries and 500 cities around the world, including in Europe, Africa, West Asia and Latin America. The company offers a range of mobility services including ride hailing, micromobility (e-scooter and e-bike rentals), food and grocery delivery and a free-floating car-sharing service. The partnership with Starship means Bolt will now be able to offer a full range of multi-modal delivery options depending on basket size and distance, ultimately increasing profitability per delivery.

“Both Bolt and Starship have created innovative products which have revolutionised the way people move around and buy and receive goods in cities”, said Jevgeni Kabanov, Bolt’s President. “We’re excited to bring our two services together through this new collaboration, which will provide millions of Bolt Food customers with a new, sustainable delivery option fulfilled by Starship’s smart and much-loved service which has had great success over the past five years. In the longer term we are hopeful about expanding our collaboration to make deliveries cheaper and more accessible to even more customers.”

Alastair Westgarth, CEO of Starship Technologies, said: “Bolt and Starship share very similar goals of making local transportation more sustainable. In our case, we provide a convenient and on-demand autonomous delivery service.

Ahti Heinla, Co-founder and CTO of Starship Technologies, added: “We think the synergy with Bolt’s overall portfolio of services will not only help Starship expand to new markets but also provide some fun, fully electric, future proofed delivery options to the markets Bolt serves.”

Starship Technologies and Bolt share Estonian roots, a country now well known on the global stage for its digital innovation and being home to more tech unicorns per capita than any other country in the world. In addition to Bolt, other tech unicorns from Estonia include Skype, the previous company of Starship’s co-founders.

Starship’s 2,000+ fleet of robots have been operating at the L4 level of autonomous driving since 2018, completing 140,000 road crossings globally every day. In April 2023, the company announced that its robots had passed the 10 million km mark (over 6 million miles) in terms of distance travelled around the world. This is more than six times that of the 1 million mile mark recently announced by international self-driving car developers, Waymo and Cruise

Starship Technologies recently expanded its service in the UK to Wakefield, with the robots already a common sight in Milton Keynes, Northampton, Bedford, Cambourne, Cambridge, Leeds and Trafford, as well as multiple university campuses across the US. In total, Starship is now operational in more than 50 service areas globally, allowing millions of people to access delivery robots on a daily basis.

Turku Osuuskauppa and Starship Technologies have signed a long-term cooperation agreement for robotic food delivery. Starship is the world’s leading developer and manufacturer of autonomous delivery robots. Starship’s robots deliver groceries from stores to the address specified by the customer.

The robots will start delivering groceries this week, initially in the city centre, Linnafälti, Martti, Yliopistonmäki and Nummi areas of Turku.

“We are really excited about the new delivery robots. We are bringing a completely new kind of service to Turku, combining innovation, cutting-edge technology and environmental friendliness. Besides, the robots are really sympathetic, and when you see them go by, you’re bound to smile,” says Arttu Parkkinen, Group Manager of Turku Osuuskauppa.

The robot delivery can be ordered via the S-kaupat mobile app. Store staff pack the ordered purchases and load them onto the robot. The delivery can be monitored in real time via the app and the customer will also receive a notification on his or her phone when the order has arrived.

The lid on top of the robot is opened via the app. The robots deliver orders within a radius of about a couple of kilometres from the store and orders arrive within an hour of being placed. The products are collected from Sale stores in Turku city centre.

The robots use artificial intelligence to plan a suitable delivery route. The route follows pedestrian paths and the robot recognises potential obstacles, people and vehicles and knows how to operate in traffic. The robots drive autonomously 99% of the time, but humans monitor their actions and can take control at any time.

“Our robots are already busy making deliveries around Helsinki, and we are sure that Turku residents will also enjoy the speed and convenience of robot delivery. Robotic delivery is a great alternative to picking up your shopping by car, as our friendly, battery-powered robots also reduce air pollution locally,” says Sandra Sooläte, Business Development Manager at Starship.

Pirkanmaan Osuuskauppa has launched emission-free and fast robot deliveries to make people’s everyday lives easier in Tampere. The city’s first food delivery robots have started operating today in Sale stores.

From 13 June, the white food-delivery robots, familiar from the Helsinki metropolitan area, can also be seen on the streets of Tampere. S Group and Starship Technologies, the world’s leading manufacturer of delivery robots, have brought the quick delivery service to the Sale stores of the Pirkanmaan Osuuskauppa chain. Customers can place orders via the S-kaupat mobile app.

“During the covid years, the demand for online food shopping increased dramatically and accelerated our development work. The new robo-deliveries are a good example of listening to customers’ needs and offering affordable delivery. Our customers can get their groceries within minutes of ordering,” says Asta Haapanen, Sale Chain Manager of Pirkanmaa Osuuskauppa.

On 13 June, the robots will start operating in Amuri, Hervanta, Hatanpää, Härmälänranta, Tampella and Vuoreksi. In Osmonmäki Sale, robot deliveries will start after the completion of the store’s renovation. Three robots will start in each store in the initial phase. The robots will deliver orders to customers up to 1.5 kilometres away from these stores, and once the robots get to know the area, their range will be extended to more than three kilometres. In Tampere, the delivery is not being piloted, and the robots are here to stay.

“At this initial stage, stores have been selected according to their density and population so that they serve as wide a range of people as possible, from students to the elderly. Many of these stores have previously offered online ordering and pick-up, and now the service is being taken even further,” says Asta.

“We are sure that the people of Tampere will also enjoy the speed and convenience of robotic delivery. By offering an alternative to hopping in the car to pick up groceries, our battery-powered robots also reduce air pollution locally in Tampere,” says Sandra Sooläte, Starship’s Business Development Manager.

Robots bring summer picnic lunch to the beach

The robotic deliveries aim to meet customer demands for fast delivery of shopping to their desired destination, especially in urban areas. The robots are available daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The food is ordered via the S-kaupat app and one robot can carry up to two bags of food. The robots’ operating area is 1.5-3.2 kilometres from the store, so you will see them in several areas across Tampere. On average, shopping will be delivered within an hour of ordering. Fast and easy delivery can also be ordered away from home.

“You can order a lunch directly to the beach or a park for a summer picnic. Or if you’re baking at home and you’ve forgotten the yeast, the robot will bring it to you in no time at all from a nearby shop. But you must move around enough to meet the robot at the bottom door of an apartment building or wherever the robot can reach,” says Asta.

At Pirkanmaan Osuuskauppa, the new colleagues have been eagerly awaited all spring. The robots will certainly bring relief to the everyday lives of busy people and elderly people, for example, but they will also delight children with their appearance.

Robo delivery was piloted for the first time last summer in the HOK-Elanto area. In addition to Tampere, the deliveries will start during the summer in Turku, Pori, Rauma, Jyväskylä and Oulu.

Robots plan their route with the help of artificial intelligence

The robots designed by Starship have already made more than four million deliveries worldwide. They plan their routes using artificial intelligence and GPS positioning. The robot knows every detail of the environment and routes, including road crossings, and with the help of AI it is constantly learning more about the environment – so even the kerbs and road crossings in the centre of Tampere shouldn’t be a problem. Starship robots make more than 140 000 road crossings every day around the world.

The robots run autonomously 99 percent of the time, but monitoring and potential failure is always done by an employee. The robots are equipped with 12 cameras, ultrasonic sensors and radar. It uses computer vision and technology to detect different obstacles.

Robots are heading to Wakefield from today as Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, has partnered with Co-op and  Wakefield Council to bring the benefits of autonomous grocery delivery to residents.

The service will initially be available to 13,000 residents across 6,500+ households, with orders made through the Starship food delivery app, which is available for download on iOS and Android. Groceries will be picked fresh from the local Co-op store on Meadow Vale, Outwood, and delivered quickly and conveniently from store to door in minutes.

Anyone placing an order will also be able to enjoy a recently launched new feature from Starship, with three robot ‘characters’ available to customise the delivery experience. Wakefield residents can choose to receive their orders from Sir Lance-a-bot, Gizmo and Sunshine, with each greeting customers in their own unique way. Customers can also choose a song for their robot to play on arrival.

Today’s launch in Wakefield continues Starship’s recent expansion across Yorkshire and the north of England. The company’s robots are already a familiar and popular sight in several other locations across the UK including Leeds, Trafford, Milton Keynes, Northampton, Bedford, Cambourne and Cambridge.

Cllr Matthew Morley, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Highways, said: “We’re excited that this cutting-edge technology is coming to our district and helping our residents who might find it difficult to get out and about with an affordable and convenient way of doing their food shopping. The service is also environmentally-friendly – the robots are zero emission; people won’t need to drive to the shops in their cars, and it will help to reduce food waste as people can order a small shop with the exact ingredients they need.”

Andrew Curtis, UK Operations Manager at Starship Technologies, said: “We are delighted to officially launch our service in Wakefield today and provide local residents with the opportunity to have their groceries delivered by our fleet of battery powered robots. The robots have been widely welcomed everywhere they operate for the benefits they provide in terms of ease and convenience for people, while also having a positive environmental impact. We all want cleaner air to breathe, and our robots make short car journeys to the supermarket a thing of the past.”

Chris Conway, eCommerce Director, Co-op, said: “Co-op stores are well placed in the heart of local communities to provide quick, easy and convenient home deliveries – whether a full shop or last-minute top-ups. We are committed to exploring new and innovative ways to increase access to our products and services, and delighted to be able to roll-out our autonomous robot deliveries to provide additional online flexibility and choice in Wakefield.”

Starship Technologies recently celebrated five years of commercial service, and since launch the company’s robots have safely completed more than 4 million deliveries around the world, undertaking 140,000 road crossings every day. People use the service for its convenience and ease of use to fit shopping around their busy lives, including the nearly 25% of Starship’s customers who either have or live with someone that has an accessibility need.

Customers can choose from a wide range of grocery items, schedule their delivery, then drop a pin where they want it to be sent. They can watch the robot travel in real-time via an interactive map, and will receive an alert when it arrives, and can meet and unlock the robot’s lid through the app to retrieve their groceries.

With a delivery fee starting from just 99p, Starship’s robots are battery powered, lightweight and travel at the speed of a pedestrian. They use a combination of sensors, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to travel on pavements and navigate around any obstacles, while computer vision-based navigation helps them map their environment to the nearest inch.

S Group and Starship Technologies launch robot deliveries in seven cooperative regions in Finland

S-kaupat, the online grocery store of leading Finnish retail operator S Group, will start express deliveries with emission-free delivery robots in phases during the spring and summer, in partnership with Starship Technologies, the world’s leading developer and manufacturer of autonomous delivery robots. Rapid robot deliveries are part of the S Group’s forward-looking food e-commerce development work, which is based on customers’ wishes.

Robot deliveries are a response to the desire of customers, especially in urban areas, to have their groceries delivered quickly to their homes. On average, the robots deliver the goods to the customer within an hour from the order. The deliveries are available in the S-kaupat app, which can be downloaded for free from the App Store and Google Play Store.

In the first phase, the robot deliveries will start in the HOK-Elanto area, where the robots were successfully piloted last spring. In the next phase, over the summer, the service will open across seven locations including Tampere, Turku, Pori, Rauma, Jyväskylä and Oulu. The goal is to make robot delivery available to customers even more widely in the future.

“Demand for fast delivery is growing strongly and this is also reflected in our future plans. With Starship’s robot technology, we can offer our customers fast and reliable delivery of their purchases across Finland, and in a rather delightful way,” says CDO Jarkko Kyttänen, S Group Retail.

Autonomous and emission-free robots are the delivery mode of the future

S Group partners with Starship Technologies, the world’s leading developer of autonomous delivery robots. Starship’s robots use artificial intelligence (AI) and GPS positioning to plan their routes. The robot knows all the details of its environment and routes, including road crossings, and AI learns more about the environment all the time. Starship robots make more than 140 000 street crossings every day around the world.

The robot works autonomously, but humans can monitor and take control if needed, although 99% of the time, the robots are travelling on their own. The robot has 12 cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and radars. It takes advantage of computer vision, as well as technology that detects various obstacles. The robots stop quickly if an obstacle is detected.

The battery-powered robots have completed over 4 million deliveries globally, reducing traffic congestion and CO2 emissions in towns and cities. The robots have been operating at L4 autonomy since 2018, and Starship’s fleet of over 2000 robots make thousands of daily deliveries autonomously in more than 50 service areas around the world.

“We’re thrilled to expand our partnership with S Group to multiple locations across Finland! Our successful partnership in Espoo last year showed the tremendous demand for robot deliveries among Finns. We’re confident that communities all over the country will also embrace our innovative service, making delivery services an essential part of everyday life. Finland is our ‘home market’, with our R&D center in Helsinki driving the design and development of our robots,” says Alastair Westgarth, CEO of Starship Technologies.

S-kaupat is the most popular online grocery store

The S-Ryhmä’s grocery sales online have developed significantly over the past couple of years. At the beginning of 2022, the S-Kaupat service was launched, which is continuously developed by the e-commerce business, technology and design experts based on customer feedback and wishes.

The online food shop is available at s-kaupat.fi and in the s-kaupat app. Tens of thousands of customers already regularly shop for food online through the S-kaupat service. Ordering large weekly purchases is particularly popular with families. Fast express deliveries are particularly useful for replenishment and impulse purchases. Over the past year, customer satisfaction with the service has almost doubled.

“The online shopping has clearly established itself among its customer-owners. The CSAT score for customer satisfaction is currently 79 and we are particularly pleased that there is hardly any negative feedback,” says Kyttänen.

The growing popularity of the S-Kaupat service is also reflected in the emergence of the S-Ryhmä’s online grocery store back as the market leader.

“In the online grocery shop, we are looking to the long term. We are investing in customer focus, profitable growth, service reliability and speed through automation and robot technology,” says Kyttänen.

A lot will happen in the field of automation in the coming years: the retail group’s first automated grocery shopping warehouses will start operating in 2024 in the HOK-Elanto and Pirkanmaan Osuuskauppa.

3 April 2023

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, has today announced an industry first, with the company’s robots having now passed the 10 million km mark (over 6 million miles) in terms of distance travelled around the world.

This milestone distance is further than any other company in the industry, and more than six times that of the 1 million mile mark recently announced by international self-driving car developers, Waymo and Cruise. To hit this milestone, Starship’s 2,000+ strong fleet of robots have made more than four million autonomous deliveries globally, also an industry leading figure, and complete 140,000 road crossings around the world every day.

While Starship’s robots have been operating at the L4 level of autonomous driving since 2018, the company also announced today that one of its robots recently completed a company record 24 deliveries in 16 hours 100% autonomously without any human intervention or oversight.

Ahti Heinla, Co-Founder and CTO of Starship Technologies, commented: “When we started developing delivery robots in 2014 many thought it was the distant future. However, fast forward to today and our robots are now an integral part of daily life for millions of people around the world. These milestones are recognition of the progress we continue to make as the market leader for autonomous delivery, and we remain as committed as ever to making the last mile of delivery more efficient, cost effective and environmentally friendly.”

Starship Technologies recently expanded its service in the UK to Greater Manchester, with the robots already a common sight in Milton Keynes, Northampton, Bedford, Cambourne, Cambridge and Leeds, as well as multiple university campuses across the US. In total, Starship is now operational in more than 50 service areas globally, allowing millions of people to access delivery robots on a daily basis.

Robots are heading to the streets of Greater Manchester from today as Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, has partnered with Trafford Council and the Co-op to bring autonomous grocery delivery to residents across Sale.

The service will initially be available to 24,000 residents across 10,500 households. Orders are made through the Starship food delivery app, which is available for download on iOS and Android. Groceries are picked fresh in two local Co-op stores in Sale (Washway Road and Coppice Avenue) and delivered locally, quickly and conveniently on-demand in minutes.

Today’s launch in Greater Manchester continues Starship’s recent expansion across the north of England. The company’s robots are already a familiar and popular sight in several other UK towns and cities including Milton Keynes, Northampton, Bedford, Cambourne, Cambridge and Leeds.

Cllr Stephen Adshead, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Environmental Services, said: “We are excited to be working with the Co-op and Starship Technologies to launch this new initiative in the Sale area. The robots are a lot of fun and it will be great to see them taking to the streets of the borough. But there is a more serious message here – Trafford Council is totally committed to helping the environment and reducing our carbon emissions and the electric robots could well contribute towards those aims. So, instead of driving to the Co-ops involved in the scheme, why not leave the car at home and have your groceries delivered by a friendly robot?”

Andrew Curtis, UK Operations Manager at Starship Technologies, said: “We are very pleased to offer the benefits of autonomous delivery to thousands of residents in Greater Manchester from today and continue our expansion in the north of England. The robots provide ease and convenience for people, while also making a positive contribution to reducing congestion and carbon emissions. We are confident that the service will be well received and look forward to a long-standing relationship with Trafford Council to hopefully roll the service out further in the months ahead.”

Chris Conway, eCommerce Director, Co-op, said: “Co-op stores are well placed in the heart of local communities to provide quick, easy and convenient home deliveries – whether a full shop or last-minute top-ups. We are committed to exploring new and innovative ways to increase access to our products and services, and are delighted to be able to roll-out autonomous robots to the streets of Greater Manchester.”

Starship Technologies will celebrate five years of commercial service next month, and since launch the company’s robots have safely completed more than four million deliveries around the world. Globally, the robots undertake 140,000 road crossings every day, with people using the service for its convenience and ease of use to fit shopping around their busy lives. This includes the nearly 25% of Starship’s customers who either have or live with someone that has an accessibility need.

Customers choose from a wide range of grocery items, schedule their delivery, then drop a pin where they want their delivery to be sent.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. and SAN FRANCISCO | March 9, 2023

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, announced today that its robots have started on-demand food deliveries at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte)

Starship’s fleet of 30 autonomous, on-demand robots are now delivering from Wendy’s, Bojangles and Shake Smart and will add more campus eateries throughout March, with 10 onboard by the end of the month. The school’s nearly 30,000 students and faculty can now use the Starship Food Delivery app (iOS and Android) to order food and drinks from campus retailers to be delivered anywhere on campus, within minutes. The service works in conjunction with the student meal plan (TBC).

Senior Jordan Badenhop said students are excited for the rollout: “The Starship robots are definitely making a conversation among students across campus. I think they are going to enjoy the ease of ordering delivery to wherever they are, from study spots to their dorm. It beats waiting in line for your favorite snack!”

Starship is already providing services to campuses across the country, including Bowling Green State University, Missouri State University, University of Houston, and the University of Illinois Chicago. Since launch, all campuses have increased the number of robots, dining options and hours of operation to meet the high demand for the service

To get started, users open the Starship Food Delivery app and choose from a range of their favorite food or drink items, then drop a pin where they want their delivery to be sent. They can then watch as the robot makes its journey to them, via an interactive map. Once the robot arrives, they receive an alert, and can then meet and unlock it through the app.

“We’re happy to bring our robot deliveries to another campus in North Carolina,” said Chris Neider, VP of business development at Starship Technologies. “Even though we are in the state’s largest city, it isn’t always convenient for students to take time to get food, so our on-demand delivery robots can provide a solution. That gives them more time for studying or taking a break, while also getting to interact with this highly sought-after technology. We think the Niner Nation will love the service!”

Delivery hours vary at the participating campus restaurants and payment options include credit and debit cards and the student meal plan.

“We are so excited to partner with Starship to bring food delivery to UNC Charlotte. It is always our goal to meet students where they are, and I can’t think of a better way to share our dining program with the entire campus.” Jody Thompson, Director of Auxiliary Services

Starship Technologies’ zero-emission robots have made more than 4 million autonomous deliveries, traveled millions of miles and make more than 140,000 road crossings every day. The robots use a combination of sophisticated machine learning, artificial intelligence and sensors to travel on sidewalks and navigate around obstacles. The computer vision-based navigation helps the robots to map their environment to the nearest inch. The robots can cross streets, climb curbs, travel at night and operate in both rain and snow. A team of humans also monitors their progress remotely and can take control at a moment’s notice.

SAN FRANCISO | March 2, 2023

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, has been named to Fast Company’s prestigious annual list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies for 2023.

This year’s list highlights the businesses at the forefront of their respective industries, paving the way for the innovations of tomorrow. These companies are setting the standard with some of the greatest accomplishments of the modern world. In addition to the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies, 540 organizations are recognized across 54 sectors and regions.

“This is an incredible honor for Starship and we couldn’t be more excited,” said Alastair Westgarth, CEO of Starship Technologies. “We’re just about to celebrate five years of commercial, autonomous deliveries so receiving this recognition is a big kudos to our entire team who continue to set the industry standard. We’re looking forward to continuing our focus on innovation by bringing convenient and affordable food delivery and convenience items to more partners and people around the world.”

Starship has a global fleet of more than 2,000 robots that provide autonomous, on-demand food and grocery delivery. The robots have operated at L4 autonomous level since 2018 and often complete multiple deliveries with no human intervention. Starship is operating on nearly 40 US college campuses as well as neighborhoods in the UK and several other European countries.

In 2022, Starship signed a partnership deal with Grubhub to provide robot delivery services on multiple campus. Starship partners with other dining service providers and directly with universities on campuses across the country, including UCLA, UNLV, Notre Dame, Baylor, Wayne State University and University of Mississippi. In the UK, Starship has expanded its partnership with national grocer Co-op and expanded service areas.

Milestone achievements in 2022 include passing 4 million commercial, autonomous deliveries, securing nearly $100 million in funding, and removing more than 450,000 car journeys, according to an internal analysis completed after four years of commercial service.

Fast Company’s editors and writers sought out the companies making the biggest strides around the globe. They also judged nominations received through their application process.

The World’s Most Innovative Companies is Fast Company’s signature franchise and one of its most highly anticipated editorial efforts of the year. It provides a firsthand look at the inspiring and innovative efforts of companies across all sectors of the economy.

“What a strange and thrilling year it has been to honor this year’s Most Innovative Companies. This year’s list compiles some of the most cutting-edge groundbreakers who are changing our world every single day, from legacy organizations like McDonald’s to upstarts like MrBeast and institutions such as NASA. Everyone on this list does something completely, uniquely different, yet, they all have one thing in common: innovation,” said Fast Company editor-in-chief Brendan Vaughan.

Fast Company will host its third annual Most Innovative Companies Summit on April 19 and 20. The virtual summit celebrates the Most Innovative Companies in business, and provides an inside look at cutting-edge business trends and what it takes to innovate in 2023. Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies issue (March/April 2023) is available online here, as well as in-app form via iTunes, and on newsstands beginning March 14. The hashtag is #FCMostInnovative.

The University of Notre DameGrubhub and Starship Technologies are introducing robot delivery via Starship’s fleet on campus, starting today.

During the initial launch, Starship’s fleet of up to 30 on-demand robots will deliver from six campus eateries: Au Bon Pain, Garbanzo, The Gilded Bean, Hagerty Family Cafe, Modern Market and Taco Bell. The University’s more than 17,000 students, faculty and staff can now use the Grubhub app (iOS and Android) to order food and drinks from on-campus retailers to be delivered nearly anywhere on campus, within minutes. The service also works in conjunction with students’ meal plans. By spring, the robot fleet will reach 50 and will service additional Campus Dining eateries.

“We are thrilled to partner with Grubhub and Starship Technologies to bring robot delivery to our students, faculty and staff on campus. The robots will provide increased accessibility to our campus units by conveniently bringing the food to our customers, filling a void in the service that we currently have,” said Luigi Alberganti, executive director of campus dining.

Robot delivery is easy to use via the Grubhub app. To get started, diners open the Grubhub app and choose from a range of restaurants labeled “Offers Robot Delivery,” and then select the location to send their delivery. They can watch via an interactive map as the robot makes its journey to their location. Once the robot arrives, they receive an alert to meet and unlock the robot through the app. Each robot can carry the equivalent of about three shopping bags of goods.

“We’re excited to bring robot delivery to Notre Dame’s campus and continue supporting innovation within its campus dining program,” said Adam Herbert, senior director of campus partnerships at Grubhub. “Robot delivery is a natural progression of the work we’ve been doing with Notre Dame for

years. This includes offering mobile ordering, Grubhub Ultimate, a kiosk solution and pickup capabilities within the football stadium via lockers.”

Grubhub partners with more than 270 college campuses across the United States to give students the ability to integrate meal plans directly into their Grubhub account and access restaurants both on and off campus for delivery and pickup.

“We’ve been expanding our relationship with Grubhub and are pleased to announce that Notre Dame is our latest collaboration,” said Chris Neider, vice president for business development at Starship Technologies. “We know the campus community will appreciate the convenience of on-demand deliveries, whether it’s to save time or to avoid some of the seasonal weather. The robots don’t mind the weather, regardless of rain, sleet or snow.”

In the fall of 2022, leadership within University Enterprises and Events worked with Starship to map delivery routes across campus. The group then collaborated with the Division of Campus Safety and University Operations to make sure everyone was familiar with the new initiative and that it met the standards of safety on Notre Dame’s campus. The robot delivery will not displace any of the associates within the Campus Dining department, but will instead increase operational productivity for team members.

“The fleet of robots will have such a positive impact on campus. They are part of our ongoing effort to bring innovative solutions to Campus Dining, they’ll expand our omnichannel retail strategy and they’ll provide flexibility and accessibility for our students,” Alberganti said. “They are also going to be a fun addition to our community.”

SAN FRANCISCO | Feb 1, 2023

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, and Grubhub, a leading food ordering and delivery marketplace, announced today that they are expanding delivery service to Baylor University and East Carolina University (ECU).

As of today, students, faculty and staff can get autonomous, on-demand deliveries through the Grubhub app (iOS and Android).

Baylor’s 20,000 students can now order delivery from more than seven eateries on campus. Starship’s fleet of 20 autonomous, on-demand robots will deliver to the majority of buildings on campus, typically within minutes, and works in conjunction with student meal plan Dining Dollars through the Grubhub app.

At ECU, another fleet of 20 robots are providing deliveries anywhere on the main campus, including College Hill. The deliveries to ECU’s 27,000 students are made possible through Grubhub and Starship’s partnership with ECU’s food service provider, and the service can be used in conjunction with students’ meal plan that integrates with their Grubhub account.

“Technology and great food service go hand in hand. We are excited to have these delivery bots on site to enhance the student experience and make dining on campus that much easier,” said Sean McMahon, B.B.A. ’96, resident district manager with Baylor Dining. “These smart robots are also fun to see around campus. We hope the Baylor community enjoys this automated service from some of our on-campus retail locations.”

“ECU Dining Services is excited to offer this innovative service to our campus community,” said Celia Daniels, director of dining services at East Carolina University. “Campuses across the country have had to increase the size of their Starship fleets to meet demand, and these fun and convenient robots are sure to be popular in Pirate Nation as well.”

“We’re excited to kick off the new year with service at two more schools,” said Chris Neider, director, business development at Starship Technologies. “We’re getting great feedback from our universities and directly from the students on how much they like the service and how much our robots have integrated themselves into the respective campus communities. Both Baylor and ECU are always looking for new ways to enhance the on-campus experience and we’re confident that the robots will be warmly welcomed.”

“We’ve gotten feedback from campus partners that robot delivery complements their existing dining programs, and we’re thrilled to bring this option to Baylor University and East Carolina University,” said Adam Herbert, senior director of campus partnerships at Grubhub. ”We want our diners to have more options when ordering their favorite meals for delivery, and this offering does just that while we help our campus partners adopt and deploy innovative technology.”

To get started with this delivery, diners open the Grubhub app and will be able to choose from a range of restaurants labeled “Offers Robot Delivery,” then select the location to send their delivery. They can then watch via an interactive map as the robot makes its journey to their location. Once the robot arrives, they receive an alert and meet and unlock it through the app. Each robot can carry the equivalent of about three shopping bags of goods.

Baylor University and ECU are the latest schools where Starship and Grubhub are providing robot delivery. The two companies first partnered in October of 2022 and currently offer this delivery method at the University of Kentucky, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Wayne State University, Southern Methodist University and Fairfield University. Grubhub partners with more than 270 college campuses across the United States to give students the ability to integrate meal plans directly into their Grubhub account and access restaurants both on- and off-campus for delivery and pickup. By offering robot delivery, Grubhub is providing additional opportunities for students to get their favorite meals delivered while making their day-to-day life on campus more efficient.

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, has today announced the launch of a new core value, confirming the company’s steadfast commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts.

The newest core value seeks to honor, acknowledge, and foster diversity within Starship while also ensuring all voices are heard and all our people feel supported and valued.

“In today’s world where people are crossing borders for education and work, it has never been more important to be inclusive and to prioritize equity as often as possible. At Starship we’ve also understood our responsibility to do this, and it’s not something that we treat lightly as we now have more than hundreds of people of all ages from more than 30 nationalities working in 5 different countries. Therefore, including a DEI focused core value was a natural step forward in stating both internally and externally that diversity, equity, and inclusion are all invaluable aspects for us at Starship,” commented Alastair Westgarth, CEO of Starship Technologies.

Starship’s six core values are: “We learn with each journey,” “Data guides the way,” “We work as one team,” “We climb over curbs,” “We always deliver” and “We love that you are different, it makes us one of a kind.” Our shared values are the core beliefs and principles that drive business, shape culture and inspire employees at Starship.

MILESTONES OF STARSHIP’S DEI JOURNEY:

2021 – Starship’s Global DEI Committee established. Global DEI Pulse survey dispersed and DEI policy was quickly defined and integrated into Starship’s culture. Global DEI Training went live for all People Leads.

2022 – Starship expands upon US Leave benefits to recognize the importance behind each employee’s individual power of choice for healthcare in response to Roe v. Wade.

DEI established community Slack channels to further incorporate support communities promoting inclusion. Mental Health support platforms were launched globally.

2023 – DEI Core Value launched! Several DEI initiatives underway: Global Holiday and Community Awareness – learning and expanding on the voices and experiences of our minority groups here at Starship. Employee resource groups and more to come!

Mason marks four years of robot deliveries and more than 330,000 orders
FAIRFAX, VA and SAN FRANCISCO | January 26, 2023

George Mason University (Mason) and Starship Technologies are celebrating four years of autonomous robot deliveries. In January 2019, Mason became the first college campus in the U.S. to offer autonomous food delivery through Starship. The service launched with 25 robots, which was the world’s largest fleet of delivery robots. The fleet has now grown to nearly 60 robots, serving the Fairfax Campus.

The campus community embraced the robots from the start. We wanted to take a look back at this groundbreaking service at Mason that is now in operation at more than 35 campuses across the US.

Here are some stats about Starship robots at Mason:

  • Since launch, more than 335,489 orders have been completed.
  • 17,334 people have placed orders – that means many people keep coming back.
  • Mason loves Starship robots, but the person with the most number of orders “really” loves Starship robots, placing 659 orders!
  • The robots have fueled student studies since 2019 with 39,828 coffees delivered.
  • Pizza might be the quintessential college food but the most popular item for the past four years has been Steak ‘N Shake’s The Original Double ‘N Fries (ordered 13,637times!)
  • If you’re at Whitetop Hall, you’re likely to spot a robot – this is the most popular delivery spot on campus.
  • Breakfast became a popular meal once the robots arrived but it still can’t beat lunch, which is the most popular delivery meal of the day.

The robots have not only made an impression on campus, but they have a loyal following online too! Everybody wants a selfie with a robot but Halloween is the prime “selfie season” for these robots thanks to pumpkinbot!

Madison Bryan-Barnes, a junior Integrative Studies major at George Mason, didn’t realize the robots delivered food when she first saw them on campus. “I always thought they were really cute and was surprised at how fast they moved,” she said. “The first time I ordered Starship I was having a really hard day, and I was grateful that I didn’t have to go anywhere to get my food. I like that Mason has a way for students to have their food delivered in a timely fashion.” Noting Northern Virginia’s changeable weather, she added, “I’ve definitely used Starship when it’s been super cold or hot!”

“It’s hard to believe that we’ve already been doing deliveries at Mason for four years,” said Chris Neider, director of business development at Starship Technologies. “The campus community was excited about the technology and the cool factor from the start. We’ve taken what we learned at Mason and have incorporated those lessons across the U.S. We’re looking forward to the next four years and beyond at Mason!”

“Starship robots allowed Mason to bring an innovative, safe, and convenient dining solution to students – which was well-received by the campus community and proved to be extremely helpful during the pandemic,” said Pascal Petter, executive director, auxiliary services at Mason. “We celebrate the milestones achieved thus far and look forward to our collaborative work in the future.”

Starship Technologies operates commercially on a daily basis around the world. Its zero-emission robots have made more than 4 million autonomous deliveries, traveled millions of miles and make more than 140,000 road crossings every day.
