Tulsa, Oklahoma, and San Francisco | Dec. 5, 2022

The University of Tulsa introduced Starship Technologies’ robot food delivery service today. From breakfast bagels and lattes to Mr. Beast burgers and hot wings, TU students and employees can have meals roll right up to their door anywhere on campus between 7:30 a.m. and 11 p.m.

Starship’s fleet of 15 autonomous, on-demand robots will deliver from seven campus eateries: Einstein Bros. Bagels; Tulsa Burgers & Wings; SOL Tex Mex; Subway; Benvenuto; Virtual Dining Concepts, which includes Mr. Beast Burgers, Tossed Salads, Mariah’s Cookie Boxes, Pardon My Cheese Steak and Buddy V’s Cake Slices; and Dietler Café in McFarlin Library. The school’s nearly 4,000 students and 1,000 faculty and staff can now use the Starship app (iOS and Android) to order food and drinks from local retailers to be delivered anywhere on campus within minutes. The service works in conjunction with TU Dining Dollars and Hurricane Gold as well as credit cards.

“In a world of ever-changing situations in the life of a student, the Starship delivery robots are an amazing addition to campus! These robots give students the convenience of working around a busy schedule, during sickness or in emergencies by ordering food instead of having to make their way over to dining location,” said TU Student Association President Justin Yang. “On top of that, the robots are fun to see around campus. I’ve seen a ton of students taking pictures and videos of them and loving the way they navigate around campus!”

TU joins other campuses across the country offering robot delivery, including George Mason University, Northern Arizona University, Bridgewater State University, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Since launch, all campuses have increased the number of robots, dining options and hours of operation to meet the high demand for the service.

“It’s always fun to bring our services to a new area, and we’re excited that University of Tulsa is the first school in Oklahoma to get deliveries from Starship robots,” said Chris Neider, director of business development at Starship Technologies. “The school is well-known for its engineering and STEM education, so we think many students will enjoy getting to see autonomous technology on campus. But we anticipate that enjoyment across the campus because the robots make people’s lives more convenient and have proven to be a fun addition to any campus or community where they provide service.”

To get started, users open the Starship Deliveries app, choose from a range of their favorite food or drink items, then drop a pin where they want their delivery to be sent. They can then watch via an interactive map as the robot makes its journey. Once the robot arrives, they receive an alert and can then meet and unlock it through the app. The delivery usually takes a matter of minutes, depending on the items ordered and the distance the robot must travel. Each robot can carry the equivalent of about three shopping bags of goods.

“TU is known as a high-tech university, so there’s no reason our dining options shouldn’t offer high-tech service,” said university President Brad R. Carson. “We recently installed robot lawn mowers on campus to maintain our large green spaces in a quiet and environmentally friendly manner. The Starship robot food delivery service is a convenient amenity that aligns with the TU brand.”

Starship Technologies operates commercially on a daily basis around the world. Its zero-emission robots have made more than 4 million autonomous deliveries, traveled millions of miles and make more than 140,000 road crossings every day. The robots use a combination of sophisticated machine learning, artificial intelligence and sensors to travel on sidewalks and navigate around obstacles. The computer vision-based navigation helps the robots to map their environment to the nearest inch. The robots can cross streets, climb curbs, travel at night and operate in both rain and snow. A team of humans can also monitor their progress remotely and can take control at a moment’s notice.

On-demand, quick and sustainable delivery service now available
LONDON | Wednesday 30 November 2022

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, has partnered with Leeds City Council and the Co-op to bring autonomous grocery delivery to the streets of Leeds.

The service will be available to 20,000 residents initially within the Adel and Tinshill area of Leeds. Orders are made through the Starship food delivery app, which is available for download on iOS and Android, with groceries picked fresh in local Co-op stores on Spen Lane, Tinshill and Otley Road, Adel, for delivery quickly and conveniently in the community. Leeds residents will be able to choose from a range of grocery items, schedule their delivery, then drop a pin where they want their delivery to be sent.

Customers can order their delivery to arrive in under an hour and watch the robot travel in real-time via an interactive map. Customers receive an alert when the robot arrives, and can meet and unlock it through the app. Since launching commercial deliveries in 2018, Starship’s robots have safely completed more than four million deliveries around the world with more and more people using the service to save time and fit shopping around their busy lives. Globally, the robots undertake 140,000 road crossings every day.

With a delivery fee starting from just 99p, Starship’s robots have become a much-loved presence across a number of communities. The expansion in the North of England for the first time follows the successful introduction of autonomous deliveries in Milton Keynes, Bedford, Northampton, Cambourne, and most recently Cambridge. Since the robots were first introduced into the UK, an estimated 1.1 million miles of car journeys have been saved with a 445-tonne reduction in CO2 emissions.

Starship’s robots are powered by renewable electricity, with an average delivery for a robot consuming as little energy as boiling a kettle to make just one cup of tea, making them a more sustainable and affordable way to get groceries delivered to your door.

Councillor Helen Hayden, Leeds City Council’s executive member for infrastructure and climate, said: “As a council we are absolutely committed to delivering alternative, sustainable methods of travel to help reach our target of becoming net-zero by 2030. We are trying to reduce the number of short journeys made by car, including those made by delivery vehicles. I’m really excited by the launch of this pilot, which will be trialled for three months in north-west Leeds.

“Since the pandemic, we have seen a huge increase in the number of home deliveries. This pilot will be transformative and will provide an alternative home delivery provision which will particularly benefit residents with mobility problems or those facing other challenges which make accessing local facilities difficult. I would encourage residents in Adel and Tinshill to feedback their thoughts on the delivery robots during the pilot by visiting the council’s survey at starshipleeds.commonplace.is.”

Alastair Westgarth, CEO at Starship Technologies, added: “We are delighted to bring the benefits of autonomous delivery to residents in Leeds. This is our first significant expansion to the north of England, and we are confident the robots will make a positive impact in terms of actively reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions, while also providing ease and convenience for local communities. Our robots have been widely welcomed as part of the community in all the areas we operate, and we are confident they will be equally embraced in Leeds. We are looking forward to working closely with Leeds City Council and Co-op and hope to further expand our service to more parts of Leeds and the wider Yorkshire region in the near future.”

Chris Conway, eCommerce Director, Co-op, said: “Co-op is committed to exploring new and innovative ways to increase access to its products and services. Our members and customers lead busy lives and so ease, speed and convenience is a cornerstone of our approach. Co-op stores are well placed in local communities to provide quick and easy home deliveries – whether a full grocery shop or for those last-minute top-ups and forgotten items. We are delighted to be expanding into Yorkshire to provide flexible and convenient options online for shoppers in our communities.”

The robots are battery powered, lightweight and travel at the speed of a pedestrian (no faster than 4mph). They use a combination of sensors, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to travel on pavements and navigate around any obstacles, while computer vision-based navigation helps them map their environment to the nearest inch.

Starship, which was created by the co-founders of communications system Skype in 2014, currently operates a fully commercial service in five countries around the world and several towns and cities in the UK including Milton Keynes, Bedford, Northampton, Cambridge and Cambourne. Residents in all of these UK towns and cities can also expect to see Starship’s robots celebrating Christmas in the coming weeks, with the robots dressed as reindeer while making deliveries to excited families.

On-demand, quick and sustainable robotic delivery of Co-op groceries expands in Cambridge
LONDON | Wednesday 16 November 2022

Food delivery robots will be taking to the streets of Cambridge this Thursday as part of a new pilot scheme by Cambridgeshire County Council and Starship Technologies, in partnership with the Co-op.

After receiving a thumbs-up from shoppers following the Cambourne pilot that started earlier this year, the decision was made by the Highways and Transport Committee to welcome the robots to the historic city streets of Cambridge.

The collaboration will be available to 12,200 households within the Cherry Hinton and Queen Edith areas of Cambridge. Orders can be made through the Starship food delivery app, which is available for download on iOS and Android, with groceries picked fresh in local Co-op stores on Perne Road and Cherry Hinton Road.

Cambridge residents can order their delivery to arrive in under an hour and watch the robot travel in real-time via an interactive map. Once the robot arrives, residents receive an alert and can meet and unlock it through the app.

Since May 2022, Starship’s robots have carried out many thousands of deliveries in Cambourne alone, with more and more people using the service to save time and fit shopping around their busy lives. Introducing the robots to Cambourne has resulted in an estimated 7,798 miles of car journeys saved in the first month and a 1,670kg reduction in CO2 emissions. Reception has been positive, with 98% of people saying they would recommend the delivery robots to their friends.

Cllr Alex Beckett, chair of Cambridgeshire County Council’s Highways and Transport Committee, said: “We are excited to see how the robot delivery service integrates into the day-to-day lives of the residents of Cambridge. The advancement of technology has been a backbone of Cambridge for many years now and this is just another step towards a cleaner more sustainable future. As well as a reduction in short car journeys, the robots will provide assistance to working families and the elderly who struggle to leave their houses to go shopping. The pilot also gives us a chance to showcase how history and technology can combine throughout the city streets as we become the leading light in the future of personal, eco-robotic delivery services.”

Andrew Curtis, UK Operations Manager at Starship Technologies, added: “We are delighted to be expanding our on-demand, quick and sustainable grocery delivery service to an additional 12,200 households in Cambridge. Our friendly robots have been very well received, and as a result are actively reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions in the areas they operate in. We are very much looking forward to working closely with Cambridgeshire County Council and Co-op, and hope to further expand our service over the coming years.”

Chris Conway, eCommerce Director, Co-op, said: “Co-op is committed to exploring new and innovative ways to increase access to its products and services. Our members and customers lead busy lives and so ease, speed and convenience is a cornerstone of our approach. Co-op stores are well placed in local communities to provide quick and easy home deliveries – whether a full shop or last-minute top-ups. We are pleased that the trial has expanded in Cambridge and, has been seen to contribute to the reduction in unnecessary car journeys while providing flexible options online for shoppers in our communities.”

An average delivery for a Starship robot consumes as little energy as boiling a kettle to make just one cup of tea, thereby delivering tangible environmental benefits compared to driving to a store.

Starship, which was created by the co-founders of communications system Skype in 2014, currently operates a fully commercial service in five countries around the world and several towns and cities in the UK including: Milton Keynes, Bedford, Northampton and Cambourne.

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, rolled out its robot food delivery service today on the Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) campus.

Starship’s fleet of 16 autonomous, on-demand robots will deliver from all campus eateries. The school’s students and faculty can now use the Starship app (iOS and Android) to order food and drinks from local retailers to be delivered anywhere on campus, within minutes. The service works in conjunction with the student meal plan.

“I’m really excited for these robots! Having the ability to get breakfast delivered right to my door simply with my meal plan will be a lifesaver for early classes and long days,” said student Olivia Romisch.

Starship is already providing services to campuses across the country, including Bowling Green State University, University of Utah and University of Idaho. Since launch, all campuses have increased the number of robots, dining options and hours of operation to meet the high demand for the service.

To get started, users open the Starship Deliveries app, choose from a range of their favorite food or drink items, then drop a pin where they want their delivery to be sent. They can then watch as the robot makes its journey to them, via an interactive map. Once the robot arrives, they receive an alert, and can then meet and unlock it through the app. The delivery usually takes just a matter of minutes, depending on the menu items ordered and the distance the robot must travel. Each robot can carry the equivalent of about three shopping bags of goods.

“We’re looking forward to serving the Missouri S&T campus community,” said Chris Neider, director of business development at Starship Technologies. “We know these students appreciate tech so we think it will be a great experience for them to interact with our robots every day. SAN FRANCISCO | October 31, 2022

Halloween is here and that means candy, costumes, and roaming pumpkins. If that last one has you scratching your head, you may not have visited one of the many college campuses and cities across the US, UK and Europe where ‘Pumpkinbots’ are making deliveries. Courtesy of Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, these orange bots are making deliveries for a limited time.

Numerous sightings have already been reported, but many PumpkinBots have escaped and remain unaccounted for. Starship Technologies is offering a reward for anyone who can spot one of the fleeing PumpkinBots and help ensure its safe return.

Pumpkinbot with pumpkins at the bottom

Pumpkinbots are an elusive breed. Unlike Ghostbusters, you can’t call them specifically, but one of them may show up with your food when you place an order through the Starship Food Delivery app, which is available on iOS and Android.

Charlie Hollway, Marketing Manager at Starship Technologies, said: “Late last week several robots slipped off their charging cables during a routine safety update on a stormy night and travelled out into the wild. But unlike all other Starship robots we’re unable to track these ones to the nearest inch, so we’re appealing to the public to help us locate them.”

Charlie added: “Joking aside, we want people to enjoy some fun with the robots and celebrate Halloween, so Starship is offering a reward to anyone who spots one of our elusive PumpkinBots.”

“We’re giving away a free robot delivery promo code to anyone who reports a sighting in their neighbourhood and shares a photo to prove the discovery with the hashtag #pumpkinbot.”

Delivery is currently available at the University of Kentucky, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Wayne State University, Southern Methodist University and Fairfield University

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services and Grubhub, a leading food ordering and delivery marketplace, announced today that they will provide robot delivery services on college campuses across the United States.

This delivery is currently available at the University of Kentucky, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), Wayne State University, Southern Methodist University and Fairfield University, and will be available at multiple other college campuses later this year. More than 170,000 students will have access to robot deliveries across these campuses, joining the list of over 25 schools across the United States where Starship’s robots provide deliveries with its global fleet of over 2,000 robots. This partnership grows Grubhub’s delivery options on college campuses, providing additional avenues for students to get their favorite meals delivered.

“Robot delivery solves the unique challenges of accessing hard-to-reach areas that come from operating on a college campus,“ said Adam Herbert, senior director of campus partnerships at Grubhub. “With Starship’s robots, students can enjoy a fun, new way to order their favorite meals right to their door—whether that be the library, their dorm, academic hall or another campus building. Offering this type of delivery further improves the Grubhub dining experience as we continue to provide innovative solutions for students and our campus partners.”

“We’re excited to partner with Grubhub on such a diverse and exciting roster of schools as we’ve worked hard to become a trusted and integrated partner on our campus communities,” said Alastair Westgarth, CEO of Starship Technologies. “Over 90 percent of students say that Starship robots are helpful and convenient, so we are looking forward to bringing our service to more students across the country.”

“Fairfield University is thrilled to partner with Starship and Grubhub—our official mobile food-ordering and delivery partner—on this innovative robot delivery initiative,” said Matt Dinnan, assistant vice president of auxiliary services at Fairfield University. “As the first college in the Northeast to roll out this technology, our campus is already buzzing with enthusiasm about the new robotic pick-up and delivery service option that will no doubt enhance the student experience here at Fairfield.”

Grubhub partners with more than 250 college campuses across the United States to give students the ability to integrate meal plans directly into their Grubhub account and access restaurants both on- and off-campus for delivery and pickup.

Starship continues to drive innovation within the food delivery industry by offering its world leading, robot delivery experience to partners as a B2B delivery-as-a-service solution. Delivery by Starship integrates into retailers’ existing platforms to make food delivery more sustainable and efficient.

Starship’s zero-emission robots make more than 140,000 road crossings daily and have made a total of more than 3.5 million autonomous deliveries and traveled millions of miles. The robots can travel up to 4 mph, carry the equivalent of three bags of groceries and operate in various weather conditions, including rain and snow.

Springfield, MO | Sept. 13, 2022

Starship Technologies rolled out its robot food delivery service today at Missouri State University., in partnership with Chartwells Higher Education. This is the first university in Missouri where Starship delivery robots are providing service. The robots will provide deliveries daily.

Starship’s fleet of 20 autonomous, on-demand robots will deliver food from several campus eateries, including:

  • Einstein Bros. Bagels
  • Subway
  • Panda Express
  • Market Café 1905 (will be added soon)

“I think the robots will be a huge hit on campus,” said Dee Siscoe, Missouri State vice president for student affairs. “Our campus community will be able to receive food and drinks in a fun, fast and innovative new way!”

Missouri State’s more than 20,000 students, faculty and staff can now use the Starship Food Delivery app (iOS and Android) to order food and drinks from local retailers to be delivered anywhere on the main campus, within minutes. The service will soon work in conjunction with the student meal plan dining dollars.

“I’m really excited for these robots! Having the ability to get food delivered right to my location simply with my meal plan will be a lifesaver for long days,” said Missouri State student Ovidio De Leon.

According to Terry Weber, Missouri State’s Plaster Student Union director, the convenience that robotic food delivery will provide to the campus is immense.

“Buildings and individuals that are not located in close proximity to the dining centers or retail vendors will have food options they’ve never had before,” he said.

Starship is already providing services to campuses across the country, including BGSU, University of Houston, The University of Utah and University of Idaho.

“We’re excited to start the new school year by expanding our services to Missouri,” said Chris Neider, Director, Business Development at Starship Technologies. “We think the students will quickly see the advantages of contactless delivery and enjoy having the robots become part of the campus community.”

Starship Technologies operates commercially on a daily basis around the world and is already providing services to campuses across the country. Its zero-emission robots have made more than 3.5 million autonomous deliveries, traveled millions of miles and make more than 140,000 road crossings every day.

A fleet of grocery delivery robots is heading to local neighbourhoods in Bedford thanks to an exciting pilot project between Bedford Borough Council and Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, in partnership with the Co-op.

The collaboration will see up to 45,000 residents across 20,000 households in Bedford benefit from quick deliveries of products selected fresh locally from three local Co-op stores in Goldington, Queens Drive and Kempston, with customers receiving groceries to their doorsteps via a fleet of Starship’s autonomous robots.

The project follows the success of Starship’s operations in six countries around the world, including same-day grocery deliveries with Co-op in communities across Milton Keynes, Northampton and Cambridgeshire.

Starship was created by the co-founders of Skype in 2014. Since launching commercial deliveries in 2018, Starship’s robots have travelled more than 4 million miles and safely completed more than 3.5 million deliveries. Around the world, the robots make 140,000 road crossings every day, equivalent to three road crossings every second.

Mayor of Bedford Borough Dave Hodgson, said: “I’m delighted that the council and Starship are working together with Co-op for innovative solutions to grocery delivery – it is exciting to see the robots on our streets. It has the potential to make life easier for thousands of residents across Bedford and Kempston while also reducing congestion. Hopefully the trial will be a success which would allow us to extend the benefits of quick and easy deliveries to more people across the Borough.”

Andrew Curtis, UK Operations Manager at Starship Technologies, said: “We are extremely excited to be bringing the Starship service to Bedford and Kempston, offering the benefits of on-demand, autonomous grocery delivery to local residents. Our robots have been very well received and integrated seamlessly as part of local communities across Milton Keynes, Northampton and Cambourne, and we are confident they will be similarly welcomed in Bedford and Kempston. We are thrilled to be working with Bedford Borough Council and Co-op on this and look forward to further collaboration in the near future to roll the service out further.”

Chris Conway, eCommerce Director, Co-op, said: “Co-op is committed to exploring new and innovative ways to serve our members and customers, they lead busy lives and so ease, speed and convenience is at the heart of our approach. As a convenience retailer, the ability to come into stores will always be important to customers, but we also know that shoppers want flexible and convenient options online, and so we are focused on providing what our customers want and need, however and wherever they choose to shop with us.”

Starship’s robots are powered by zero carbon electricity, with an average delivery for a Starship robot consuming as little energy as boiling a kettle to make just one cup of tea. Orders are made through the Starship food delivery app, which is available for download on iOS and Android, with groceries picked fresh in local Co-op stores and delivered quickly and conveniently in as little as one hour or less.

Bedford and Kempston residents will be able to choose from a range of grocery items, schedule their delivery, then drop a pin where they want their delivery to be sent. They can watch in real-time via an interactive map as the robot makes its journey to them. Once the robot arrives they receive an alert and can meet and unlock it through the app.

The robots are lightweight and travel at the speed of a pedestrian (no faster than 4mph). They use a combination of sensors, artificial intelligence and machine learning to travel on pavements and navigate around any obstacles, while computer vision-based navigation helps them map their environment to the nearest inch.

SAN FRANCISCO | June 30, 2022

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, today announced a trio of new benefits for U.S. employees in light of last week’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v Wade. Starship firmly believes in an individual’s power of choice – the right to choose what is appropriate healthcare for the individual’s mind, body and physical well-being.

The new benefits will provide paid leave for travel to the nearest state for reproductive care and support, paid volunteer/rally time to assist one’s community in addition to observing Election Day (November 9th) as a US company holiday to encourage its employees to go vote. The new benefit related to paid leave for travel will be available to any U.S. employee who lives in a state with restricted or no access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare and support.

There are strong and passionate supporters on both sides of the Supreme Court decision and we understand not all of our employees will support this decision. However, Starship recognizes the potential impact of this ruling on its teammates for years to come. The safety and well-being of Starship’s employees is the company’s number one priority. Starship supports its employees’ rights to make their own decisions regarding their healthcare options–regardless of where they live; choosing what is best for them.

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON | June 23, 2022

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, today announced new sustainability achievements. Since launching a commercial version of the emission-free robot delivery service in 2018, Starship has calculated that 450,000 car journeys have been avoided in the areas where it provides service on a global basis.

Other achievements:

  • The robots have helped avoid 55kg (121 pounds) of microparticles, which are known to negatively affect air quality
  • Starship robots have made it possible to avoid 33kg (nearly 73 pounds) of nitrogen oxides; this is based on the average car emitting more than 800mg/km of the substance that is likely to increase respiratory issues
  • The average Starship journey only uses the same amount of energy needed to boil water for a cup of tea/coffee

Starship delivery robots are powered by zero carbon electricity and can travel nearly an entire day on a single charge. The robots operate on college campuses and in neighborhoods. In the UK, the robots are part of a significant ecosystem in the city of Milton Keynes geared toward the Council’s commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030 and carbon negative by 2050 in order to tackle climate change. Additional research by Starship in Milton Keynes found that close to 70% of its customers forgo driving to a store or receiving a delivery from a fuel-powered vehicle in favor of robot delivery.

“Any gas or diesel powered vehicle journey that can be removed is a win for the environment,” said Alastair Westgarth, CEO of Starship Technologies. “Our battery-powered robots are not only convenient, but they don’t contribute to pollution or traffic congestion. We are excited to play whatever part we can in providing a sustainable alternative to short vehicle trips.”

Starship Technologies operates commercially on a daily basis around the world. Its zero-emission robots make more than 140,000 road crossings every day and have completed three million commercial deliveries and travelled more than 4 million miles (7 million+ kms) globally, more than any other autonomous delivery provider.

Starship robot rolling on a street

This morning, Alastair sent this to Starship staff following an all-hands global meeting

Today is an incredibly difficult day for Starship Technologies and everyone who cares so passionately about the company and our hugely talented team.

Delivering news of this nature is never easy, particularly when it concerns such hard working, professional and dedicated team members. But sadly we have had to make the very tough decision to reduce our team size and close a small number of sites in the US and Germany.

Why we have made this decision

The significant downward shift in the global economy and capital markets’ changing their investment strategies has meant we have needed to make changes and increase our focus on costs and profitability improvements which will allow us to safeguard Starship’s long term future.

We are taking four main steps, which include:

  • Staff reductions: we are reducing our global team by 11%. This includes employees in the US and Europe.
  • Reduction in service areas: Starship will be ceasing service at a small number sites in the US and Germany. We will be stopping service in these areas over the next two months. We remain committed to all of the other locations we currently serve both in the US and globally.
  • Reducing our monthly capital expenditures
  • Examining all other expense items across the company for optimization

We have chosen to close the locations that do not have a near-term roadmap to profitability as we have learned some locations are not consistent with our cost improvement objectives. This is down to a combination of factors that impact our commercial results, like the number of merchants that participate, and the number of potential customers in a service area. We want to thank our partners and customers in these areas for welcoming and embracing Starship. We are hopeful that at some point we will be able to serve these markets again but we must say farewell for now.

How Starship moves forward

While it is never easy to share such difficult news, Starship will be better positioned for success in the future, allowing us to continue to extend our position as the autonomous last mile delivery platform of choice. Starship is the only commercial autonomous delivery service currently operating at scale. Our robots are completing more than 2x the deliveries we did last year, highlighting our extraordinary growth and Starship’s ability to solve the many problems that human-based delivery businesses are facing. Each and every member of our team, past and present, has made a contribution to this success and I am so incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved to date. To ensure we secure the long term success of Starship, we will be taking the following steps moving forward:

  • Focusing on commercial opportunities where we have been and will be the most successful. When we have the right mix of merchants, consumer base and commercial terms, our service excels and expands. We will redouble our efforts towards these markets.
  • Adding new partners as part of our ‘Delivery as a Service’ model, where we provide the power of Starship’s automated delivery platform to meet the needs of retailers, delivery platforms and others which are searching for an environmentally, socially and financially sustainable way to meet the growing demand for local delivery in their businesses.
  • We will operate with a more efficient business and operations team across all regions and as we scale to more cities and campuses.

To our team members who are leaving Starship, we want you to know that this is absolutely not a reflection of your performance or your value to us. You have all helped us enormously with our mission to make on-demand delivery more accessible, affordable and sustainable, and you have paved the way to build something that has impacted so many people globally. I want to express our sincere and heartfelt gratitude for your support and thank each and every one of you for your contributions on our journey so far. We will do everything in our power to help find new roles and support you during this transitional period.

  • Starship is making changes to meet the challenges arising from the new global macroeconomic environment
  • Focus will intensify on costs and improving profitability
  • As part of this strategy, Starship will focus its services to locations that meet its profitability goals
  • Consequently, Starship will be closing select locations and reducing headcount, both in those locations and at the corporate level, impacting 11% of the team
  • These difficult changes put Starship in a strong position to meet its financial objectives moving forward

The global economy and investment market have taken dramatic downward shifts recently and, like many other startup and tech companies, Starship has been impacted and will be making changes.

Earlier this year Starship announced nearly $100 million in funding, and in light of the global macroeconomic and investment environment, we must now make changes to ensure we sustain our long term success as the leader in last mile autonomous delivery. Many of our locations have completed record numbers of deliveries this year and demand in those markets continues to be high, with plans to add to our fleets. Those markets have a broad mix of merchants, and a large base of potential customers. However, due to the aforementioned changes in the economy and investments, Starship must now make difficult changes to focus on cost savings and improving profitability.

These changes mean that we are closing a small number of service locations in the US and Germany over the next two months. The locations that we must close do not have the right mix of merchants and customer base to meet our near-term profitability goals. In addition to the staff impacted by these decisions, we are also reducing the team at the corporate level.

These unfortunate but necessary changes will help put Starship in a stronger position moving forward. We are continuing to improve efficiencies over time and this focus will set us up for long term success. We believe our delivery robots are a big part of the solution to the pain a lot of other delivery companies are experiencing right now, and we’ve already proven this in multiple places. We are eternally grateful for our partners and customers who have supported us and we hope that we can continue to earn the love and loyalty for those we still continue to serve.

A Starship robot rolling through an English street

Food delivery robots will soon be taking to the streets of Cambourne as part of a pilot organised between Cambridgeshire County Council and Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, in partnership with the Co-op.

The exciting tie-up will see 12,000 residents in 5,000 homes benefit from quick deliveries of products from their local Co-op, with customers receiving groceries from a fleet of Starship’s autonomous robots which will bring the items to their doorsteps.

The project, beginning on 17 May, is part of the council’s wide-ranging environmental agenda as it will help to reduce short car journeys and improve air quality, with an average delivery for a Starship robot consuming as little energy as boiling a kettle to make just one cup of tea.

Starship currently operates a fully commercial service in six countries around the world, including across university campuses in America and in local neighbourhoods here in the UK in Milton Keynes and Northampton.

The company was created by the co-founders of communications system Skype in 2014, and since launching commercial deliveries in 2018 Starship’s robots have travelled more than 4 million miles and safely completed more than 3.5 million deliveries to customers. Around the world, the robots are making 140,000 road crossings every day, equivalent to three road crossings every second.

The Cambridgeshire pilot will see residents living in Lower and Upper Cambourne able to order deliveries which are selected fresh locally from the Co-op store at 29 Mosquito Road in Upper Cambourne. A map showing who will be eligible to book deliveries can be viewed on Google. If the project is successful, Starship has signalled its intention to expand further across the county and use more suppliers, which in turn will lead to new jobs being created.

Cllr Alex Beckett, chair of Cambridgeshire County Council’s Highways and Transport Committee, said: “The partnership between the council and Starship is tremendously exciting and has the potential to make life easier for thousands of residents while also reducing congestion. Hopefully the trial will be a success which would allow us to extend the benefits of quick and easy deliveries to more people across the county.”

Cllr Mark Howell, member for Cambourne, added: “I’m delighted people living in my ward will now be able to enjoy the convenience of having small food deliveries dropped off at their front door. This will cut down on the number of small car journeys and save time. I would like to thank Starship for choosing Cambourne for the trial and I look forward to seeing how it goes.”

Andrew Curtis, UK operations manager at Starship Technologies, said: “We are very pleased to be bringing the benefits of on-demand, contactless grocery delivery to residents in Cambourne. In the last few years we have had extremely positive feedback from people using our service regularly in Milton Keynes and Northampton who have embraced the robots as part of their local communities. We’re looking forward to working closely with the council in Cambridgeshire and hopefully expanding the scope of this initial project.”

Chris Conway, Co-op eCommerce Director, said: “Co-op is committed to exploring new and innovative ways to increase access to its products and services. Our members and customers lead busy lives and ease, speed and convenience is at the heart of our approach. Co-op stores across the country are well placed to serve shoppers locally and a key part of our strategy is to further develop our ecommerce offer by using our store footprint to provide same-day, rapid, home deliveries. As a convenience retailer, the ability to come into stores will always be important to customers, but we also know that shoppers want flexible options online, and so we are focused on providing what our customers want and need, however and wherever they choose to shop with us.”

Starship’s robots, which are powered by zero carbon electricity, are advanced autonomous devices that can carry items over short distances without needing a driver. Orders are made through the Starship food delivery app, which is available for download on iOS and Android, with groceries picked fresh in local Co-op stores and delivered quickly and conveniently in as little as one hour or less.

Cambourne residents will be able to choose from a range of grocery items, schedule their delivery, then drop a pin where they want their delivery to be sent.

ENDS

64 Percent of College Students Say They Didn’t Skip Meals Because Starship Delivery Robots Allowed Them to Avoid Long Lines for Food

Delivery robots are becoming a popular feature on college campuses across the US and are one of the best and sometimes only options for contactless delivery. It turns out the delivery robots have had other positive impacts on campus.

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, recently conducted an online survey of 7,063 college students on more than 20 campuses across the US where it provides delivery services. Among the findings:

  • 6 out of 10 (60%) said they could study more because the robots deliver when and where they need them
  • 1 in 4 (25%) say the robots have improved their mental health
  • 30% said they felt safer on campus because of the contactless delivery offered by the robots
  • Nearly two-thirds (64%) said they didn’t skip meals because they didn’t have to wait in long lines for food
  • The robots are overwhelmingly popular with more than 98% saying they love them (78%) or like them (20%) on their campus
  • More than 60% (61%) place at least one order per week
Delivery Robots Embraced by Students

Part of the reason that students feel such affinity for the Starship robots is because cuteness and convenience were always part of the design. The survey shows:

  • More than 9 out of 10 (93%) say the robots are convenient/helpful
  • Three-quarters (75%) say the robots are friendly/cute
  • More than 40% (44%) say they have treated the robot as they would a person by saying thank you, excuse me, etc.
  • More than half (56%) say they have helped a robot if it appeared to be in need
  • Other popular responses included patted the robot (37%) or took a selfie with it (19%)
Delivery Robots Poised for Future Growth

The increased reliance on Starship delivery robots during the pandemic has had a positive impact that continues to move the industry forward at an accelerated pace. Starship tripled its delivery service in 2021 and survey results show that the students like what they see:

  • More than 9 in 10 (95%) say they would recommend autonomous robots to friends on other campuses
  • An overwhelming majority (90%) prefer robots over drones (8%) or self driving cars (2%) when it comes to autonomous delivery
  • More than 6 in 10 (61%) say the robots are an asset to the campus
  • Two-thirds (67%) feel more favorably about the robots since seeing them in person and/or using the service
  • More than 90% (92%) say they will continue to use autonomous robot delivery it if is available after they graduate

“I never really thought that robots would be part of my college life or that I would get to see them so closely,” said Mason Frantz, a senior at Bowling Green State University. “Now, I just think that it’s so cool and I’m also really glad that I can sleep in longer because the delivery comes to me when I want it.”

Starship has been providing autonomous, on-demand deliveries on college campuses since 2019. Starship robots can now be found delivering daily on campuses nationwide including Bowling Green State University (BGSU), Arizona State University (ASU), Purdue University, University of Kentucky, Ole Miss, Oregon State University (OSU), UCLA, University of Tennessee, North Caroline A&T and James Madison University.

“We thought that college campuses would be a great setting for delivery robots but we had no idea they would be this successful,” said Ryan Tuohy, SVP of Business Development and Sales at Starship Technologies. “We feel fortunate that the students appreciate them so much and treat them as a valued member of the campus community. It’s also rewarding that they are not just making college students’ lives more convenient but that they are making many of them happier while doing it.”

The Starship Food Delivery app is available for download on iOS and Android. To get started, customers choose from a range of their favorite food or drink items, then drop a pin where they want their delivery to be sent. The user can then watch as the robot makes its journey to them, via an interactive map. Once the robot arrives, the customer receives an alert, and can then meet the robot and unlock it through the app.

Starship Technologies operates commercially on a daily basis around the world. Its zero-emission robots make more than 140,000 road crossings every day, have completed over 3 million autonomous commercial deliveries and travelled more than 4 million miles (6 million+ kms) globally, more than any other autonomous delivery provider.

At first, deliveries will start from six Alepa stores in the city of Espoo during April. Starship aims to sign more partnerships with Finnish retailers going forward. Starship is also expanding its R&D center in Helsinki, which plays a significant role in the design of robots and the development of the service.

Starship’s robot deliveries will begin in Alepa Otaniemi on Tuesday, April 12th. Deliveries to remaining five Alepa stores – Alepa Mankkaa, Alepa Jousenpuisto, Alepa Laajalahti, Alepa Leppävaara ja Alepa Matinkylä – will begin the following week expanding the service to 8000 households. Alepa will initially deploy a total of 60 delivery robots.

Starship’s robots are designed to deliver food, groceries, and packages locally, in minutes. The company invented the first delivery robot in 2014 and has since created a global industry for autonomous delivery services. Since launching commercial deliveries in 2018, Starship robots have travelled over 6 million kilometers (over 4 million miles) and safely completed more than 3 million deliveries to customers. Around the world, they are making 140,000 road crossings every day, equal to three road crossings every second.

Starship was founded by Ahti Heinla and Janus Friis, who are also the co-founders of Skype, a VoIP-based videotelephony software. In addition to Finland, Starship operates in the USA, UK, Germany, Denmark, and Estonia with a rapidly growing fleet of nearly 2000 robots.

“As the world’s leading autonomous delivery provider, Starship is proud to announce our partnership with Finland’s leading retail operator, HOK-Elanto Group. We’re confident customers of Alepa stores will appreciate the positive environmental impact and affordable convenience of autonomous delivery. Our friendly robots were born to serve, with the aim of becoming a much loved and integral service to the local community,” says Phillip Lindberg, SVP Product at Starship. In cities around the world, Starship’s battery-powered robots have already made a positive impact on local traffic congestion and air pollution, replacing hundreds of thousands of car journeys for fresh milk and top-up groceries.

“With the help of robots, we can offer our customers a new convenient, environmentally friendly, contactless, and affordable way to deliver online orders. These robots have already delivered millions of orders worldwide and I believe they will be popular in Finland as well. We are looking forward to the feedback that our robots will receive from our customers”, says Jukka Ranua, Development Director e-commerce and digital services at HOK-Elanto. “Based on demand and customer feedback, we have an opportunity to grow the network of stores covered by robotic delivery,” Ranua continues.

“The worldwide market for autonomous delivery services is growing rapidly globally, with countries and cities increasingly adopting Starship’s delivery services. As a progressive and high-tech country, Finland is fast to embrace innovation, so we see great potential in the Finnish market and expect to announce additional partnerships with local companies soon. Finland is the “home market” for Starship, as the R&D center in Helsinki plays a vital role in the design of robots and the development of our service. Technological know-how in Finland in online stores, application platforms as well as in autonomous vehicles, robotics and various mobility technologies is world-class. We plan to double the size of the R&D center this year”, Lindberg continues.

The size of the autonomous delivery robot market is expected to reach $55bn by 2026 with a CAGR of 20.4%, according to Facts & Factors.

This is how the Starship service works

The customer downloads the Starship Food Delivery app to their phone (iOS and Android phone). The customer places an order at the desired delivery address and makes the payment with the mobile application. The store staff packs the purchases into the robot and the departing robot automatically selects the fastest and best route to the delivery address.

The customer can track the robot’s course using the map in application, and the customer will be notified when the robot arrives. The robot container lid is opened with the application. After delivery, the robot will automatically return to the store and be cleaned. The robot can carry 2-3 food bags at a time, and one delivery costs the customer 0.99 euros.

Technology guarantees security

The Starship robot works autonomously, but humans can monitor and take control if needed, although 99% of the time, the robots are travelling on their own. Starship robots have been operating at L4 autonomy since 2018, which means the robots complete numerous deliveries in a row 100 % autonomously, including road crossings.

Before starting operations in a new location, Starship scans the robots ’operating environment and creates a virtual 3D map of it. The robot knows all the details of the environment and passageways, including road crossings, and uses artificial intelligence to learn more about the environment all the time.

The robot has 12 cameras, sensors and scans. It takes advantage of computer vision and GPS positioning, as well as technology that detects various obstacles, whether it is a pedestrian, a cyclist, or a dog. The robot also has a voice feature that allows it to communicate with those around it.

The robots travel on pedestrian walkways and make more than 140,000 road crossings every day around the world. The robots travel at a speed of about 6 kilometers per hour and stop quickly if an obstacle is detected. One robot weighs approximately 36,5 kilograms.

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and Starship Technologies rolled out a robot food delivery service today on Rocky Top.

A fleet of 40 autonomous on-demand robots will deliver from 16 campus eateries including Einstein Bros. Bagels, Steak ’n Shake, Starbucks, and Subway, among others. Students, faculty, and staff can use the Starship app (iOS and Android) to order food and drinks from select dining partners to be delivered anywhere on campus.

Working in conjunction with Vol Dining, the service functions with the student meal plan so VolCard, Dining Dollars or Flex Dollars are accepted as payment along with debit and credit cards.

“I’m really excited for the robot service. The convenience of it is a game changer for a big campus like ours,” said Drew Hyler, a senior studying supply chain management from Roanoke, Virginia.

Starship is already providing services to campuses across the country including Arizona State University, George Mason University, the University of Kentucky, and Purdue University.

“We’re always looking for new and innovative ways to bring enhanced and on-demand services to our students and campus community,” said Brian Browning, associate vice chancellor for finance and administration. “As our campus population continues to grow, so must our ability to offer a variety of services.

Starship Technologies operates commercially on a daily basis around the world. Its zero-emission robots have made more than 3 million autonomous deliveries and traveled millions of miles, and they make more than 100,000 road crossings every day. The robots use a combination of sophisticated machine learning, artificial intelligence, and sensors to travel on sidewalks and navigate around obstacles. Computer vision-based navigation helps the robots map their environment to the nearest inch. They can cross streets, climb curbs, travel at night, and operate in both rain and snow. A team of humans can monitor their progress remotely and take control at a moment’s notice.

“We think the campus community at UT is going to love having Starship robots on campus,” said Ryan Tuohy, senior vice president of business development and sales at Starship Technologies. “The school has a highly regarded program in supply chain and logistics, and our robots were created to help solve the inefficient last-mile delivery problem. UT students will not only get to interact with the robots on a daily basis, but we’re also looking forward to hiring student workers who will get valuable real-world experience.”

How it works

To get started, users open the Starship Deliveries app, choose their food or drink items, and drop a pin where they want their delivery to be sent. They can watch on an interactive map as the robot makes its journey to them. Once the robot arrives, they receive an alert and can meet and unlock it through the app. Delivery is usually just a matter of minutes, depending on the items ordered and the distance the robot must travel. Each robot can carry up to 20 pounds—the equivalent of about three shopping bags of goods. For more information on the service, visit the Vol Dining website.

Starship Technologies is revolutionizing deliveries with autonomous robots. The robots are designed to deliver food, groceries, and packages locally in minutes. The delivery robots have traveled millions of miles and completed more than three million autonomous deliveries around the world. Starship was founded by Ahti Heinla and Janus Friis (Skype chief architect and co-founder), and Alastair Westgarth is the CEO.

Company reaches 3 million commercial autonomous deliveries milestone, with deliveries growing more than 60K per week
SAN FRANCISCO & TALLINN | March 1, 2022

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, today announced that it has raised $100m in the last 30 days, including a new $42m Series B funding round led by the Japanese-Nordic VC firm NordicNinja and the Estonian visionaries Taavet+Sten. The Series B funding will help Starship further scale its service and meet increasing demand for its autonomous delivery service by launching in new cities in North America and Europe, including tens of university campuses in the U.S. Some of this funding is immediately going to support people by donating directly to the Red Cross in Ukraine.

The new investment, including the recently announced €50m ($57m) investment from the European Investment Bank (EIB), doubles the company’s funding and brings Starship’s total funding to $202m. Other investors in Series B include TDK Ventures, and Goodyear.

Starship tripled deliveries in 2021 and is continuing to gain momentum as the entire autonomous delivery industry expands. The size of the autonomous delivery robot market is expected to reach $55bn by 2026 with a CAGR of 20.4%, according to Facts & Factors.

Some of Starship’s recent achievements include:

  • Completing more than three million commercial autonomous deliveries (more than any other autonomous delivery company)
  • Operating a fleet of more than 1,700 robots daily, making it the world’s largest fleet of autonomous delivery robots
  • Launching service at new US college campuses – North Carolina A&T, SMU and South Dakota State University – with more to be announced soon
  • Starting service in Pleasanton, California through its grocery partner The Save Mart Companies
  • Achieving delivery costs that are now lower than the human equivalent, which is believed to be a world first for any robot delivery company, whereas most others are still majority human controlled and in pilot mode
  • Extending its partnership with UK grocery partner Co-op with a commitment to launch in five new cities
  • Doubling the size of its company’s presence in Finland in 2021, with plans to double it again this year
  • Reaching nearly 4 years of L4 autonomous deliveries (Starship has been doing L4 since 2018); on a daily basis, Starship robots will complete numerous deliveries in a row 100% autonomously, including road crossings

“Everyone is talking about how to fix the issues with last mile delivery,“ said Shinichi Nikkuni, Managing Partner of NordicNinja VC. “Time and again, Starship has proven itself to be years ahead of others with world leading autonomous driving technology for sidewalk delivery, leading to accumulating more and more data and experiences through much wider commercial operations. There aren’t many companies that have a truly autonomous service that has earned so much customer loyalty and adoration. We think Starship has found the right formula for success on a global scale and are excited to be part of their future journey.”

“We have always been committed backers of the engineering ingenuity budding from the Estonian tech scene, and Starship takes this literally further than anyone: to the millions of miles around the planet these robots have already covered. And many hundreds of millions more, as they have passed the crucial milestone making robot delivery more cost effective than human equivalents,” added Sten Tamkivi, investing with Taavet Hinrikus through their Taavet+Sten partnership.

TDK Ventures is so proud of the rapid growth and success Starship has accomplished in a few short years,” said Nicolas Sauvage, TDK Ventures President. “Our pride runs deep, as they were the very first investment we made. We use the term ‘king of the hill’ for startups that we feel are at the top of a small emerging market, and in our estimation are poised to become world leaders in massive markets within five to 10 years. Starship was our first king of the hill. With #1 industry positions today in a variety of metrics – number of paid deliveries, of autonomous robots, of kilometres driven, data and more – Starship continues to trailblaze the way. We are excited to be part of their journey and join this new funding round.”

“The autonomous delivery market has been gaining momentum the past couple of years and we think it will really take off this year,” said Alastair Westgarth, CEO of Starship Technologies. “The demand for Starship’s services continues to rapidly increase and we are regularly contacted by more college campuses and cities that want our services, often because they hear about the great results that Starship is already delivering. I’m impressed with every member of our team who believes in what we are doing and has helped us hit yet another milestone of three million commercial deliveries. I also appreciate the investors who trust our vision and who are helping us get to the next phase of our journey.“

Since Starship invented the delivery robot in 2014, the industry has become more competitive which the company feels is a compliment to the hard work it has put in after the last couple of years. An entire industry has developed around automated last mile delivery (automating last mile delivery), a well-known inefficient bottleneck.

“We know this industry inside out, because we invented it,” said Ahti Heinla, co-founder and CTO of Starship Technologies. “So many unexpected things have happened to get us where we are today but I think we can all agree that on-demand services are mainstream and not going away anytime soon. While other companies in this space are busy making claims, we are gladly very busy making thousands of autonomous deliveries every day and improving the efficiency of our service.”

The Starship Food Delivery app is available for download on iOS and Android. To get started, customers choose from a range of their favourite food or drink items, then drop a pin where they want their delivery to be sent. The user can then watch as the robot makes its journey to them, via an interactive map. Once the robot arrives, the customer receives an alert, and can then meet the robot and unlock it through the app.

Starship Technologies operates commercially on a daily basis around the world. Its zero-emission robots make more than 100,000 road crossings every day and have completed three million commercial deliveries and travelled more than 3 million miles (5 million+ kms) globally, more than any other autonomous delivery provider.

SAN FRANCISCO | February 16, 2022

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, is now delivering groceries in the San Francisco Bay Area. Starship is expanding its partnership with The Save Mart Companies for the exclusive launch of an on-demand grocery delivery service at its Lucky California flagship store in Pleasanton, CA. Lucky is the first grocery store in the San Francisco Bay Area to partner with Starship.

Starship and The Save Mart Companies first partnered in September 2020, when the Save Mart flagship store in Modesto became the first grocery store in the U.S. to offer Starship robot delivery service. Since its launch, that store has expanded its delivery area to serve over 55,000 households. In Pleasanton, the service is launching to thousands of residents, with the delivery area expected to grow rapidly in the coming months, similar to Modesto.

“We are very pleased to bring the benefits of autonomous delivery to Pleasanton, in partnership with Lucky California,” said Ryan Tuohy, SVP of Sales and Business Development at Starship Technologies. “Since launching our service in Modesto in 2020, we’ve been excited to see the extremely positive reaction to the robots and how they were embraced as part of the local community. We think the residents of Pleasanton will appreciate the convenience and positive environmental impact of autonomous delivery and we fully expect the service area to quickly expand to more households.”

The robots, each of which can carry up to 20 pounds of groceries – the equivalent of about three shopping bags – provide a convenient, energy-efficient, and low-cost delivery alternative to driving to the Lucky California store, allowing shoppers to browse thousands of items via the secure Starship app for on-demand delivery straight to their home.

The robots travel autonomously – crossing streets, climbing curbs and traversing sidewalks – to provide on-demand delivery to shoppers. They often become local celebrities as community members share their robot selfies and “love notes” on social media.

“Since the debut of our contactless delivery service at the Save Mart flagship store, feedback from the Modesto community has been incredibly positive,” said Barbara Walker, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for The Save Mart Companies. “We are thrilled to expand this service to Lucky California in Pleasanton and offer a safe and efficient grocery delivery solution, along with some joyful entertainment, especially as the service area progressively expands over time..”

The Starship Food Delivery app is available for download on iOS and Android. To get started, customers choose from a range of their favorite groceries and drop a pin where they want their delivery to be sent. When an order is submitted, Lucky California team members gather the delivery items and carefully place them in a clean robot. Every robot’s interior and exterior is sanitized before each order. The customer can then watch as the robot makes its journey to them, via an interactive map. Once the robot arrives, the customer receives an alert, and can then meet the robot and unlock it through the app.

Starship already offers its services in many parts of the EU, UK and the US in cities, university campuses and industrial campuses, with further expansion planned in the near future. Starship is able to do L4 deliveries everywhere it operates – entire cities and campuses. The robots have been operating at L4 since 2018. On a daily basis Starship robots will complete numerous deliveries in a row 100% autonomously, including road crossings. This is why the cost of a Starship delivery is now lower than the human equivalent, which is believed to be a world first for any robot delivery company, whereas most others are still majority human controlled and in pilot mode.

Starship Technologies operates commercially on a daily basis around the world. Its zero-emission robots make more than 100,000 road crossings every day and have completed more than 2.5 million commercial deliveries and travelled more than 3 million miles (5 million+ kms) globally, more than any other autonomous delivery provider.

Funding injection to boost R&D for market leading on-demand robot delivery service
LONDON & TALLINN | January 25, 2022

Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, has today announced that the company agreed on a €50m quasi-equity facility agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB).

The lending arm of the European Union (EU) and one of the largest providers of climate finance, the EIB supports projects that promote the priorities and objectives of the EU. This financing, which is supported by the European Fund for Strategic Investments, has been facilitated via a venture loan, and will be used for research and development, including the building of thousands more robots at Starship’s engineering and innovation facility in Tallinn.

Alastair Westgarth, CEO, Starship Technologies, said: “We’re proud of our European roots as well as the growing team there that remains a vital part of our operations. As the market leader in autonomous delivery we are constantly looking to innovate and find new ways to improve our service. This backing from the EIB will help enable us to continue to reshape last-mile delivery and bring the benefits of on demand delivery and convenience to millions more people. The additional engineering resources that we will hire in Europe will be another key component in making this possible.”

“Electric vehicles in all shapes and sizes will be part of our future, and can be a key part in the sustainable transport puzzle,” said EIB Vice-President Thomas Östros. “Starship’s delivery robots are already proving their worth, and we are glad to support the company so that they can continue to develop their technology and scale-up their production.”

Commissioner for the Economy, Paolo Gentiloni, said: “This EIB funding for Starship is a great example of how the Investment Plan for Europe can boost innovation in Europe. The additional funding will benefit the development of the company’s autonomous delivery services, thereby further improving services for consumers and contributing to Europe’s ever-growing and vibrant research, technology and innovation ecosystem.”

Starship already offers its services in many parts of the EU, UK and the US in cities, university campuses and industrial campuses, with further expansion planned in the near future. Starship is able to do L4 deliveries everywhere it operates – entire cities and campuses.
