Amended Labor Law 2024: Ensuring Employers Provide Equal Treatment in Jobs

The Saudi Council of Ministers approved wide-ranging amendments to the Saudi Labor Law. The new amendments to the Saudi Labor System include amending 38 articles, deleting 7 articles, and adding two new articles to the Labor Law. The new amendments will enter into force 180 days after their publication in the Official Gazette.

The amendments took into account the interests of all parties involved in employment contracts, including expanding the scope of provisions for leave and contractual work, adding definitions for the terms “resignation” and “grievances,” as well as an article specifying resignation procedures and reviewing grievance procedures for employees. Penalties were imposed on engaging in labor recruitment activities without a license from the Ministry.

  • Death of a sibling: In the event of the death of an employee’s brother or sister, he or she is entitled to three days of leave with compensation, whereas previously it was only one day.
  • Extended maternity leave: The duration of maternity leave has been extended to 12 weeks, instead of 10 weeks previously.
  • Probationary period notice: When terminating an employment contract, the employee must provide 30 days’ notice, while the employer must provide 60 days’ notice.
  • Training probationary period: The maximum time a new employee can spend in the probationary period has been set at 180 days.
  • Overtime compensation: The new policy also allows employees to agree for paid leave instead of receiving their regular wages for overtime work.

The new amendments also require employers to provide a training and qualification policy to enhance workers’ skills and improve their efficiency.

Several amendments have also been made to the section on maritime work.

These amendments aim to enhance the proposal to develop existing systems and regulations that contribute to supporting the market and the production and services sectors, in addition to providing the appropriate legislative environment and supporting small and medium enterprises with the aim of creating more job opportunities.

It aims to create a more attractive work environment in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 and contribute to achieving sustainable development.

The new amendments aim to improve the labor market in the country, increase job stability, protect the rights of contract employees, develop human capabilities in government service, increase training opportunities for employees, and increase job opportunities for all citizens.
